Miles to empty gauge problem

Featured Replies

Hello my miles to empty gauge loses the digits and just displays a series of dashes . At this time the engine performance is adversely affected.  At low revs , up hill there is a lack of power   and generally running slightly lumpy . Is this a coincidence?  Mechanic put on the computer and got an error code of U0164-00  list comes with HVAC . No engine faults show up .

Everything clears when stop and restart engine and the fault only happens once or twice a trip .

Any idea what problem is , first garage I took it to didn't want to get involved.  Cheers

Is the main battery condition good?

Sounds like it's losing the speed signal (needed for both range gauge and optimal engine running).  Does the speedo continue to work correctly at that time?

Haven't had that checked but have no issues with it

Yes speedo normal , can this happen intermittently  ?

Hmm.  I wonder if the speedo drive is on the gearbox for the automatic.  That would allow the dial speed to keep working while the ABS speed used for other functions was incorrect.

I'm surprised you haven't got any ABS fault codes or any module communication codes being triggered (aside from HVAC).

You may be able to pick up more faults with a Ford specific diagnostic such as Forscan, though the HVAC code shows that the tester used was at least slightly better than generic OBD.

Difficult to know what the next step should be in this case.  Charging the battery certainly can't do any harm and would be good to rule that out.  I might also be inclined to remove the dash cluster and check that the plugs are firmly seated in the back.

Hi thanks for input .

Do you have to go to a Ford dealer to test with Forscan?

No, Forscan is a free program for DIY use.

I'm sure @unofix can suggest a suitable adapter.

FORScan is for use by anyone. There are 3 versions, (a) Windows Laptop (b) Android Phone (c) iPhone mobile).

Only the windows version dose it all with the mobile versions allowing the same level of monitoring and some basic functions like resetting service indicators and clearing DTC's.

Download FORScan: https://forscan.org/download.html

Laptop cable connection 'vLinker FS' : https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vgate-vLinker-Adapter-FORScan-MS-CAN/dp/B0952P4MLP

Hi @Dav63 I have the exact same problem as you, although a different error code. How did you solve this?

Since @Dav63 never returned after the 19th August 2023, your guess is as good as anyone else's.
