Cambelt inspection 2012 1.0 ecoboost

Featured Replies

My girlfriend just bought the above from a used car dealer. We noticed it was due a wet-belt service as he'd advertised it as fsh. He agreed to pay for labour if we paid for parts.

He delivered the car complete with Microsoft Word looking invoice, no part numbers or anything.

How can I check if the belt is new?

Can I drain the oil, remover the sump and.look for markings on the belt?

I'd rather not just cross my fingers on this one.

Many thanks.

You can't.

And I guarantee he hasn't

He sounds like a thoroughly decent sort of chap. Labour would be about £700 possibly more. He must have been making a good profit on the sale of a 2012 Focus to just be able to write off that amount of money.

I'm with Dave on this one, the job has not been done.

My, my! You and Dave are very cynical. But so am I!

If the OP has been charged for the parts the dealer ought to be able to at least produce the receipts for those.

The invoice he gave me says £1000 labour, which I don't have to pay. Are there any paint pen marks to look for or anything? How much aggro is it to drop the sump, can you see th belt through the bottom end?

From another thread:

The blockage felt like rubbery fibers mixed with oil sludge or gunk. It was likely bits from the timing belt or oil pump belt from wear. The belt looked good, the words Ford Motorcraft were still visible on the belt.

To remove the sump, I removed the AC compressor and unbolted the top side of the catalytic converter pipe. There were I believe 16 bolts holding the sump, which are retorqued to 8 foot pounds. It took me about 6 hours total, but i had a few bolts that were stuck.

So they claim the labour was £1000, which sounds about right, and parts should be £400. How many hours did it take them to do the job ?

@alexp999 I haven't looked yet. Been busy playing with my Freelander today.

@unofix I don't know. They had the car for two weeks as there were other things that required attention.

From what i can see, they installed a brand new turbo and cleaned a few sensors.

I just want my girlfriend to be able to enjoy her new car with peace of mind.

For what it's worth, we both love the car. It's so much fun to drive and so practical!

There is a much simpler way to check than taking things apart.

Get a torch and simply look at the nice big crankshaft bolt and washer.

Is it new? If so the job has almost certainly been done. Special tools and/or lots of labour are required to get to a point with the bolt replaced and with the engine remaining correctly timed.

Is it old? Job has not been done (nobody would do what is required for a cambelt change without changing the main bolt that costs less than a tenner.

As ray said if they've replaced the crankshaft bolt they've gone a bit of effort  - it's the first thing I checked after getting mine done
