Ford Fiesta MK7 2012 Electrical faults (FORScan report)

Hey everyone,

Hope everyone is all good and well, at the weekend I got into an uncomfortable position when driving my fiesta, my electrics cut out mid driving, causing a quick black out and my steering wheel to lock then my dash and radio coming back randomly quickly. From a result of whatever occurred, my right headlight has blown at the front however the car turns on fine again and we managed to drive it back to a safe spot. I have a red warning light for the battery charging system on the dashboard now and I have gathered a detailed report from FORScan which indicates high voltage, in my opinion from first sight this could be an alternator problem and it probably needs replacing. 

However the report also indicates something about ABS, I was just wondering would this potentially be involved in what happened to the car? Causing a shortage? I am not an expert when reading these reports, of course I will probably take it into somewhere for them to look but I thought I would ask here to see if anyone that does work on FORDs electrically could have an idea of what needs to be done?

Any help from this would be really appreciated, can;t thank this forum enough for the help they have given me in the past already.

 



My diagnosis would be alternator fault with severe over voltage of the cars electrical system. It's quite possible that several modules and lamps may have suffered damage if the over voltage lasted for any length of time.

I'd recommend a new alternator and a new battery.

Our honest first opinion was this, we was quite keen on changing these parts but took it to someone who doesn't speclialise in electrics but has done work on the car before and the voltage output on the battery with the engine on and off seems stable, just over 14 when the engine is running and around 12 when off which he said indicates to him that the alternator is running fine? He was suggesting there could be a problem with the PCU, power control unit and the cluster probably needs removing and worked on. 

What do you think from those voltage results, still worth changing battery and alternator maybe or maybe get to a specialist to look at the PCU?

Not sure what you are referring to reference the 'power control unit' PCU. There is a PCM but that is the powertrain control module which is for the engine and gearbox.

I'll attach a battery condition chart below just for your information.

Thanks for the chart, 

New update regarding this, had someone who does electrics within cars come over to look at it, typically was charged I would say the "high" for absolutely nothing, said a connection was loose and could of caused it, tightened that and replaced my lights even though I could of done that 😂 Voltage when engine was on and off again remaining stable and looking fine when on my drive and he was looking at it for probably 10+ minutes (just over 14 volts when on). Anyhow, take it on a very short journey last night, he said if the dashboard or radio lights kinda flash thats a sign of an increase in voltage and that occured, after driving it a short distance and being stationary with lights on for around 2 minutes then the red warning light returned so yeah, he might of been telling truth about how that can cause it but for my situation sadly it hasn't solved much.

I have gone ahead and bought an alternator off ebay and will attempt to replace it with a new battery as well which I've had for a few months now as a spare and then I will give you an update on how that gets on. Hopefully after doing this, that will be the end of it. Also sorry for the confusion I was referring to the PCM in my previous comment.

I did do another FORScan from last night after my short drive again, a lot less errors popping up which could help highlight the problem more, I will post this below so you can see but yeah I think what you are suggesting is definitely what is needed.
