Mondeo Mk4 2.0 tdci

Featured Replies

Evening all. Having a bit of a drama with my 2010 Mondeo 2.0 tdci, automatic. I've found a few people in this forum and others that have had similar issues but none that have been resolved so I'm hoping someone on here might be able to help.

So I drive my car and initially it runs absolutely fine. Then after smooth acceleration to about 50mph it'll flash up with "engine malfunction" and the EBS light comes on. I can still drive the car fine but I believe its in limp mode as it doesn't accelerate as quickly, but will still get to 70 or 80 eventually. If I pull over and turn the car off and on again the fault is gone, no limp mode. I then accelerate smoothly again to about 50ish mph and it'll do the same.

First time it happened I put a code reader on and had one message about a dirty DPF and one about the pressure of the fuel return. I cleared these and ran the car again until the same fault occurred. Plugged my code reader back in but there were no codes. Its happened 3 or 4 times since and every time there's no fault code on the system.

I've had a quick check for seeping leak off pipes, split hoses and any obvious issues but can't see anything.

Could anyone suggest where to start with more in-depth fault finding? I feel like this is a problem that could have me chasing my tail so if anyone can offer some guidance I'd be very grateful! Thank you.

The first thing you need is a Windows Laptop loaded with FORScan. You will also need either a very good ELM327(modified) cable OR a  vLinker FS cable. Once you have these you will be able to read all of the Ford specific DTC's on both the Medium Speed and the High Speed canbus systems.

FORScan (free for windows laptop use): https://forscan.org/download.html

vLinker FS cable: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vgate-vLinker-Adapter-FORScan-MS-CAN/dp/B0952P4MLP

OK so I got hold of a decent scanner. Said the issue was DPF clogged. Ran it through the DPF regen on the laptop and took it for a spin but its done the same again. Does it sound right that I've got engine malfunction message and EBS light on because of the dpf?? I'll get the car on the ramps tomorrow and have a look at the dpf pipes and sensors to make sure there's nothing wrong with them, but I feel like there might be more to it than just a sooty dpf?

What was the exact code?  If it's full of ash it'll need professional cleaning or replacement.

Would also suspect the vaporizer failing at this age.
