Sync 3 update

I'm assuming you guys on native Sync 3.3/3.4 hardware can't use the Cyanlabs updater to get the latest versions?

Yes you can. There is a small window of 2019 hardware which doesn't have the MY20 problem, but came natively with Sync 3.3.

The problem is that cyanlabs likes to default to the blocked, leaked reformat tool which bricks MY20 and any pretty much any APIM which has been replaced since 2020, even if it's not MY20.

If you use the Autoinstall mode of Cyanlabs then it's fine. That's the same as Ford uses to provide the normal updates and the way we used to build the updates ourselves manually.

To me, it would be much safer to default the software to autoinstall mode and make the reformat an experiemental feature behind lots of warnings or be a hard to find option, because despite the developers best efforts, people don't read everything on the download page, or the notes when the app opens. They will just keep clicking through till it does something.

The reformat tool saves a bit of time, but risks briking the APIM, I wouldn't ever use it personally.

Thanks - didn't know the date cutoff and the methodology used. My APIM (retrofitted) is a 2016/2017 one IIRC so the reformat tool has always worked fine on mine - though I do see the warnings on the app.

I'm interested to understand what cars came with or are running.

Obviously being a retrofit I went straight for the latest version each time so now running the latest 3.4 build on Cyanlabs - but what is being offered the official way?

Do Mk3.5 Foci get 3.4, or are they stuck on 3.0? Am I right in thinking that 3.0 units don't get the latest map updates due to the different partition tables between 3.0 and 3.3/3.4?

I'm a stickler for OEM and I'm stuck between wanting to find an original 3.0 APIM which hasn't been updated, to downgrading to the latest 'old theme' 3.3 (so that I get the auto-dim toggle back), or stick with 3.4 with the odd workaround I've got for the flickering screen/auto dim issue.

MY18.5 cars came with Sync 3.2 or 3.3 from factory, I can't remember which. That started with the MK4 Focus, MK3.5 Focus with Sync 3 are all MY16/17. (The MY refers to the calibration of APIM, not the actual car model year).

I'm not sure of the exact date MY20 started. My August 2019 built car is MY18.5 APIM, even though the car is recorded as a 2020 in my Ford account.

Thanks Dave, but that did not work for me either. I
contacted Ford again and they said there is an outstanding recall on this car that affects this, i.e …
22B24 MODEM 4 CONNECTIVITY FUNCTIONALITY ISSUES. Strange thing is.. when i check online for recalls on this car it says there are none outstanding. Got back onto my dealer and they finally replied say NOT to attempt any update myself as it will cause ‘issues’ with my Sync. Did not say if they could fix the problem or update the maps though…

car, not care

Hi Dave, I did reply but for some reason my reply did not show here. That idea did not work for me. However, I wondered about what was happening to the wifi if the car was switched off and locked. I fitted one of these bluetooth battery monitors across the battery. I set my car with home wifi connected and set it to check for updates. I then left the car. The battery monitor showed a significant drop in voltage for around 30 minutes, showing current was being drawn so I assume this was the car wifi still trying for an update. When I went back to the car some hours later, there had been no updates (same sync version and F10 maps), and the Ford site still shows an error with the logfile.

I does make me wonder now, how often the car will keep trying for updates? I will have to do some more battery monitoring each time I park up at home. Could be quite a drain on the battery if it does it every time it reconnects to my home wifi.

Well, weeks have passed and the Ford sync website still says ‘software updates are disabled’ . However, In turned on Wifi updates in my Ecosport and after a couple of hiccups, every time I park up I get a new ‘download in progress’ message. So far I have 5 different files starting …1U5T…. BFK and ….1U5T…. BGK….downloaded, each one taking several hours to complete. Anyone have any idea what these all are please?

They are map updates.

F12.

Thanks Alex, I kinda guessed that, what I meant was really why so many? I only expected one map update to F12. Or does Ford regularly update the maps. I got the impression from forums this is not usually the case?

The map update is made up of 13 files.

The actual map data is split across 9 files (different parts of Europe) and then there are 4 voice files that contain the different languages.

Previous version of Sync 3 used a single file for map and a single file for voice. Which was huge.

The issue with single big files is they take a very long time to extract and take up a lot of space. It also means if it gets interrupted it has to start the whole thing again.

Splitting it into multiple files means each one is downloaded, verified and extracted quicker with less space needed on the APIM between files and also if it gets interrupted or fails verification due to a bad download or transfer, it only has to start that smaller file again instead of the whole thing.

Thank you Alex. Goodness, 13 files! Is there a list somewhere so i know when the last one has downloaded? My system keeps saying ‘ up to date’ then starts another file download!

I’ve not had any issues downloading the files or syncing the log files. Sync update worked fine.

However, the maps update will just NOT install. 3 times I’ve tried and each time I’ve downloaded the files from scratch and extracted to the USB key and each time I get this error. Do we think the downloaded files are dodgy from Ford?

USB key is fine. 64GB. Used it to successfully do the previous update but it’s just not having this one at all…

This means there is not enough space on your APIM to start extracting files.

Are you on 3.4.23188?

Yes on the most recent version. Followed update instructions to the letter. How am I supposed to control the space on the APIM?!!

what’s weird is, I just checked the maps version as it says F12…but it only completed the first part of the update.

It asked for a ‘key cycle’ to do the second part. I turned the car off, drove it later that day and within 5 minutes it threw this error and has been doing so since….

i can’t see that it’s done the full update as the sync update and first part of the maps only took about a combined 30 mins if that…!??

Is this anything to do with Sync updates? Ford said I have a this recall on my car but the dealer says there are no outstanding recalls. My car returns a blank if I look at the ESN number for my modem. Not even sure there is a modem fitted?

It's not used for Sync updates, but it is used for remote functionality and wifi hotspot.

Apparently CyanLabs can circum-navigate many of the Sync (Ford update) issues?

Haven't tried it but might be worth a look?

It depends. It won’t help any MY20 cars or those that have had replacement APIM.
