Odd colant temp and engine fan behaviour

Featured Replies

Not sure if anyone can shed any light on this but recently while we've been in negative temps outside (0 down to -8) the engine temp has been failing to get above 41'c its been hovering between 34 and 41. but the engine fan is almost constantly running.

2011 fiesta van 1.6TDCi

the van is used for deliveries and is start stop over the space of 4 to 6 hours a night, mainly at 20-30mph but it does get some 50mph driving throughout the shift also. at this point im thinking the temps have to be a dodgy temp sensor but no idea why the fan is running so much.

being no temp gauge on the dash i monitored the temps with forscan (mobile) and with torque (mobile app) both give same temp range.

any suggestions on this would be gratefully received 🙂

Is it a DPF model?

not too sure, if it is i havent seen a DPF light or warning on the dash.

tonight the outside temp was 6'c and it got up to 58'c while i was crusing along at about 50mph for 4 miles or so then got back to 20mph roads and it droped back to the mid 40's

i didnt notice the fan kicking in at all tonight either.

Temp sounds like thermostat is stuck open.

Don't know why fan kicks in when it doesn't need to, though.

im thinking the same now on that i did check the coolant res after one of the deliveries i done and temp was saying 41'c and i was able to touch the bottle so thinking it was prob reading correctly, new stat aint all that expensive now i just gotta work out where it is and how much of a pain it is to change.

still no idea on the fan though hopefully someone here will be able to shed some light on that.

Does the van have AC? If it does the fan will run when the AC is switched on.

There probably isn't a DPF light on a PFL Mk7.  Ford didn't bother fitting one in the early days of DPF's - that's partly why the 1.6 TDCI Focus got a bad rep for DPF issues.  They didn't bother fitting a service reminder to Mk2 Focus either!

I reckon it will be a DPF model.  The fan runs at full speed whenever attempting a DPF regen.  If the regen kept getting interrupted by stop/start driving then it'll just keep trying again at some point after each start.

The alternative is, above, the AC may have been on.  Though modern Fords don't allow the AC to run in minus temps as it can damage the system.  I'm not sure whether that's the case with the Mk7 or not.

The thermostat on the 1.6 TDCI is located above the gearbox, just below the vac pump.  Much easier to change that the Zetec petrol thermostats of the same era.
