14 plate 1L ecoboost won't start

Featured Replies

Hi hoping someone can help with this.

I've got a 14 plate fiesta that won't start. It's a keyed version. No stop start.

When the key is turned there are clicks from relays in the engine bay.

I took out the starter motor and it runs fine when connected to a battery. (Could it be dying and not have enough power to crank it over)

After putting the starter back in I tried using jump leads from my van to start it and it started. So I figured it could be the battery.

I've fitted a new battery. And now even with the jump cables it won't start.

Also checked all started and ignition related fuses.

Tomorrow I'll check the engine ground cable and spray some contact cleaner on the starter motor feed cables since I didn't do that when I had it off.

Other than that I'm all out of ideas.

Anyone got a clue.

Did some more diagnostics..

I put the multimeter between the contacts on the starter motor.

I got 12v on the main post into the solenoid.

When turning the key I got 10ish volts on the post (on the top of the motor when looking from underneath)

I loosened the bottom connection (the one with 12v) and sprayed some contact cleaner in there and re tightened.

No change though.

Next ill contact clean the other connection on the starter and see if that helps.

And after that it'll be a new starter motor.

FIXED!

It was a loose connection on the solenoid. The one I haven't yet mentioned. I think it goes from the solenoid to the actual motor. Not sure if it has a specific name.

Anyway, I loosened the nut, which was already a little loose. Sprayed with contact cleaner and then tightened it.. I was very relived to hear it start!

Well done mate, you did 100% better than I would've 🙂
