Fiesta Mk 7 Possible Engine Mount Failure

Featured Replies

Hello!

I believe the right hand/offside engine mount has begun to fail as there is a knocking sound from the right hand side of the car when:

  • Shifting from first to second and failing to 100% match engine revs to wheel/transmission speed,
  • Going over bumpy ground,
  • When the car is in too low a gear (I don't do this on purpose, it's just something I've noticed when I've gotten it very wrong).
  • Additionally, there is some shuddering when trying to take off quickly in first up a hill, and if you ask the car to reverse quickly from a standstill without raising the revs it feels as if something is twisting to relieve the pressure of the sudden torque.

I've had a look a look at the mount and I can push the engine around on the mount slightly with my fingers and using a pry bar I can lift the engine up from the mount about a cm or so, again just using my finger on the pry bar.

Going off this evidence I strongly believe the engine mount is shot, but I am not familiar with engine mounts so this could be normal.

Looking at replacements I am just wondering if it's worth going with an aftermarket mount like the Vibra-technics one or just finding an OE/OEM replacement? Buying a new OE part costs nearly as much as the Vibra one so if it's a better part I don't mind spending a little extra.

Thanks in advance!

P.s it's possible the knock could also be from the lower suspension arm ball joint failing, but I will investigate this later if the engine mount turns out to not be an issue.
