Mk8 1.5tdci oil life

Featured Replies

Hello all,

Hoping this isn't covering same ground as previous topics...I did try a quick search.

My 2018/68 plate 1.5tdci (120ps version) has more than once not made it the full year between services, without asking for an oil change.

It doesn't do that many miles but I tend to do a number of medium / long journeys - car will sit around for some days then have some use. I don't do very short journeys but some urban driving is unavoidable. & yes it does regularly go on motorways.

I'm aware this engine does a lot of regen cycles owing to the Nox trap - but I try never to switch it off before a regen finishes.

Maybe self flattery 🙄but I think I drive it quite sympathetically... but still can't make the oil last a year.

Sorry to drone on - am just wondering what other 1.5tdci owners' experience is (aware there aren't many of us).

Wow, well done for having one of the rarest Fiestas. They didn't build these for long.

I wanted one of these as soon as it was launched, but as soon as my deal was up they'd discontinued it

Oil change frequency on these is 12 months OR 10,000 miles, not 12,000 miles. If you're doing lots of short journeys it will want changing more often

Giving it a decent tickle every now and again will do it and the DPF the world of good

Thanks for your thoughts Dave. Wondering if the 120ps was discontinued partly because of tightening emissions  - as the RDE element was brought in maybe it couldn't keep real-world Nox low enough without costly mods? I think the 85ps was on sale a bit longer...

Guessing you didn't want a nearly new one when your deal was up then 😉

Maybe I'm driving mine too gently at times, so maybe need to tweak driving style a bit, tho as I said I always try to let regen cycle finish before switching off.

Still hoping there might be one or 2 other owners on the forum to hear from...

Yes, 85PS lasted a bit longer.

I wanted a three door Vignale 120PS but it had been discontinued when I went to order so had to settle for a MK4 Focus 120PS Ecoblue

Giving some revs whilst in Regen mode certainly helps and gets it done quicker. 3,800 RPM is the magic number, if you can get it to stay ay 3,800 for a few minutes regen will be over in a flash

Belated thanks again Dave.

If you'd got there in time a 3-door 120ps diesel Vignale would've been a really rare Fiesta... & am curious about how you got on with the Focus but aware that's off topic.

I note the 3800rpm number and might try that in suitable time and place - around town it might feel a bit anti-social haha.

Yes. definitely motorway, you could hold 2nd gear and blast up and down a dual carriageway.

speed is the magic figure for reliable regens, not vehicle speed

I didn't keep it long, got rid when the prices shot up. Got a BMW X2 now.
