Road trip - happy trails.

Featured Replies

Just thought I'd share a good news story.  For various reasons we took the Fiesta to Spain for a month. We travelled as far south as Valencia.

The car had just ticked-over 100k miles, so the 2,696 mile trip puts it just shy of 103k.  No issues.

I stupidly took it into the Bardenas Reales desert on the way back, on 17" wheels and low profile tyres, but hey we were only 1000 miles from home - what could go wrong?

To anyone considering a mk7, I recommend the 1.6 petrol engine once again - tried and tested old skool technology, it returned 47.4 MPG for the trip.  Happy trails.

And still a very good looking car, imo!

I generally hire that Fiesta model when I go to Greek Islands. IMO nicer to drive than my mk 8 and better looking too.

I love the torque on the mk7, don't need to gear change as often on all those hills.

Yes I thought I was going to struggle with the 5-speed, for economy and flexibility - but no; it was perfect.

I actually returned 47.7 MPG for most of the trip, when I kept cruising speeds around mid-60s mph - it wasn't until the last day of driving, 450 miles, where I pushed a bit harder at over 70 to 80 (130kph) that the economy dropped down to 47.4.

Thanks for posting this Jon - glorious views in your pics and it sounds a cracking trip.

Am thinking the 1.6 petrol may be an underrated engine in the mk7 - similar mpg to the 1.2 or 1.4s but that much torquier, and could have it in Titaniums as well as Zetec Ss...

Sounds like a great adventure, it's always been a dream of mine to drive across Europe, then over to the Adriatic coast. But these days I'm knackered after a 200 mile journey so no hope for me 😕

Hard to believe I used to do 30,000 per year when I worked

Just do it in smaller chunks. Self-driving adventures are the best.

And actually this trip wasn't about the car or driving, but we were biking in various parts of northern Spain - I just wanted to say how well the Fiesta ran at 100k miles.  The fact we put in the back two gravel bikes, spares, and all our luggage for over a month shows how 'big' inside the older small cars really are.  Modern cars are too big on the outside, weigh too much, and don't actually carry as much inside.

(OK I cheated and took the rear seats out, but even so.....)
