My wet belt snapped this morning. 
 

My mechanic I deal with is saying I’m better off getting a re con engine. Is he right?

    Yes, afaik this is an interfence engine, so valves have probably contacted pistons and there will be bit of belt all round the oil system causing starvation issues.
