Car Electrical Water Damage Advice

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some advice on an issue I've encountered today. I recently bought a Fiesta ST mk7. On the way to work this morning, I went through some surface water which was in no way dangerously deep, it was about an average-sized puddle. The problem was I went through it at about 40 mph, and it did splash up quite high. It was fine for about 2-3 minutes, however after that, the dash came up with a passenger door open notification, the wipers turned on (the handle was turned off), my indicators were unresponsive, and there was a funny noise in the dash. Despite this, the stereo and music were unaffected, windows still went down, the air conditioning system appeared to be unaffected, no engine lights and drove fine.

I am not too worried about any engine problems as I checked a few parts (the oil seems okay, the filter is dry, and the engine bay appeared bone dry) and it was running fine. It has been around 2 hours now, and I decided to turn the ignition to put the windows down slightly- everything had gone back to normal. There was a slight noise to begin with but it went away, and all the issues I'd mentioned were now fine.

I am aware water damage is an absolute pain and can be extremely costly. I will of course have it checked out, but does this sound like a serious problem to anyone? Will I be okay driving it for now?

Check the BCM (main fusebox under glovebox) for water ingress, if it's wet, get it dried out ASAP

And then check for leaks
