Mk2 - DTC - P170A - Clutch Switch Out Of Self Test Range

Featured Replies

Hi, getting the following fault code after performing a PCM - Key On Engine Off On Demand Self Test on FORScan.

Code: P170A - Clutch Switch Out Of Self Test Range

Module: Powertrain Control Module

What could be the issue? Any advice or help would be greatly received.

Thanks

I reckon the clutch switch could be out of self test range.

If you've got keyless start or cruise control they may not operate correctly.

If not, then it's just to help the ECU match the revs between gear changes and increase idle during slow manouvres without throttle.  You may not notice any difference with a broken switch.  So it's up to you whether to replace it or not.

Ahh ok I have neither of those functions but I have noticed the revs increase when clutch is depressed between gear changes.

Need to find the part number for the clutch switch and replace @TomsFocus thank you 🙏

What does this switch do?

It disengages the cruise control when you press the brake pedal

Thanks @unofix I won’t have that then as don’t have cruise control in mine.

You may find it's still fitted on a Titanium, even though you don't have those functions.

It was fitted on my 2008 Titanium.  All I needed to retrofit cruise control was a replacement steering wheel and ELMConfig software.

@TomsFocus that would be a nice idea!

Just need to make sure I got the right steering wheel then...and ELMConfig Software....is that part of FORScan or something separate?

Guess it will need to be purchased / licesned?

Thank you.

You won't have the right steering wheel.  Need a 4 spoke with the CC buttons fitted.

ELMConfig is a separate program, but uses the same lead as Forscan.  It is totally free with no licence.  Back in 2014 when I bought my Mk2, Forscan did not have the functionality to enable cruise control so ELMConfig was the only option then, but Forscan may do it nowadays.

Yes, that's the one.  You'll also need the airbag as well.  It is illegal to post airbags so might be better to find a local one to collect.

Technically it's only the plastic cover that's different, not the main body of the airbag.  So if you're brave, you can cut the old 3 spoke cover off, and then push a new 4 spoke cover on.  Though I ended up clamping mine in a vice as it took a lot more force to get the new cover on than I expected.

Covers aren't available from Ford but could be bought online from a few places online 10 years ago.  This is one example:
