Rough start and stalling - help required please

Featured Replies

Hello all,

New to the forum - I've recently purchased a Ford Fiesta Zetec 1.6 16v, it's the older 02 model.

I'm having some issues when starting:

The starter motor runs fine, it turns over, shakes quite a bit, then the car either stalls or the revs move a bit and it settles just over 1000 revs and then runs fine.  Once its going there is no drama at all - and normally once its been running it will start fine the next time.

It doesn't always do this, but is now most times i start.  Over the last 2 weeks the engine warning light has been on and then gone off after a day or two.  This has happened a couple of times.

Battery seems fine, I've checked the plugs are sparking, the air filter looks relatively clean.  I'm not a mechanic, but relatively practical and not afraid to get my hands dirty, so want to use it as an opportunity to learn all I can.

I know the answer is probabaly to buy a reader and plug it in and get the codes - but i was hoping someone might be able to tell from the description. 7

I have a video of starting the car this morning (notice the shaking, which fixes itself at approx 0.16 seconds. - link to the video: https://photos.app.goo.gl/L7kb9pTKGm9EKeox5

Glad of any advice - thank you very much,

You appear to have the engine check light come up so I guess diagnostic trouble codes should be stored.

a laptop with Forscan and a vlinker cable is the most economical way to get the codes read (about £35 for the cable)

could be one of many things like split vacuum lines, sticking egr or air by pass valve (also known as idle speed control valve).  Codes should definitely help identifying.

This previous post gives more details on what cables you require, ForScan is a free windows download...

Use E5 fuel, change Plugs, leads, Coil Pack then check engine earth or add an earth to the cylinder head

Not sure if this car has a fuel filter, but if it does, change that too

Symptoms of the revs jumping would indicate the vacuum hose has split

Thanks for your help all.  I have bought a vlinker cable and will have a go at reading the codes.  Then see where we go from there.

Evening all, I have managed to read the codes on my ford.

Where would you start to diagnose the exact issue from this please?
