Help / Input - Ford fiesta Electrical issues

Featured Replies

I've recently bought a lovely 2008 Ford Fiesta MK6 (facelift). Unfortunately it has some gremlins:

- both Wing mirrors not operable and do not autofold.

- The booth release button on dashboard not operable.

We've run diagnostics and it returns a bad earthing fault error.

I was wondering if anyone can facilitate and provide some guidance on a fix please. I bought the car knowing the issue and took the risk hoping there would be a fix.

I would be grateful if anyone has experienced this problem and could please provide insight / advice on a fix.

Are you sure it has power fold door mirrors ? If the answer is 'yes' then do they operate when you press the button on the drivers door switch pack ? Very few Mk6.5 Fiestas had auto fold door mirrors.

Will the tailgate open with the button on the handle ? If yes, then check the GEM/BCM for signs of water ingress.

There are wiring diagrams in the Haynes workshop manual for the Fiesta.

Yes i can confirm that the car has autofold function - we checked (the system feature) and the function is also specified on the adjust controls. The issue is the function doesn't operate when you try to adjust either winger mirrors or press down to autofold.

The tailgate only opens using the main key but not the tailgate release switch on the dashboard.

It is likely that you have a problem with the GEM as both the tailgate button on the dashboard and the tailgate button on the handle are controlled by the general electric module (part of the passenger compartment fuesbox).

The Door mirror power fold function and adjustment is also controlled by the GEM so again I would suspect the usual issue of water ingress.

Okay and thank you. What would you propose as a possible solution to fix? What do recommend i do to get both to function?

Disconnect the negative lead from the car battery.

Then remove the GEM unit completely (it's part of the passenger compartment fuesbox). Carefully inspect it for signs of water and/or greenish corrosion. Check also the connectors of the wiring harness for the GEM.

If the GEM is damaged then you will need to find a replacement with the same part number. It will need programmed with your cars "AsBuilt" data which you can do using FORScan.

Hi

Thank once again for the above. A final input on couple of issues.

- Central lock: only unlocks the drivers side and not the passengers side with the remote central lock key. I've tried a default reset (holding the unlock and lock buttons simultaneously for few seconds, wait for the indicator lights to flash and then simultaneously hold the lock + unlock once again. Unfortunately this hasn't resolved the issue. Not sure what's going on TBH. Any thoughts?

- Intermittent ignition / starter issue: When I turn the key to start the car, it makes weird sound  / Noise and it doesn't start the motor (on first turn). It's intermittent and on the second or third attempts it's suddenly fine once again. Sometimes, no issues on first attempt whatsoever (it's temperamental) and I suspect it's a starter motor or the ignition switch issue? not sure and be good to have your take.

Regards

My thoughts would be most likely the starter motor on a 2008 car. If it's making some noise when you try and start then I'd rule out the ignition switch.

Only press the buttons simultaneously ONCE, doing it twice toggles the unlocking back to the previous setting.
