Can seem to figure out the type of engine my car has.

Featured Replies

I have a 2014 Fiesta 3 door. Lovely car. Been in the family for 7 years now (owned previously by my Grandad until he sold it to me after I passed my test last month as he and my nan are both retired so they rarely used the car (only used once from Jan - March by him).

Here is what I cannot seem to work out and hoping someone can clarify what engine I have as it almost seems like I own an incredibly rare type of Fiesta.

So it's a 1.0 3 cylinder engine. On the rear of the car it has an Econetic badge with no mention of Ecoboost on it what-so-ever. A Google search of '1.0l Fiesta' returns results of Ecoboost engines, apart from an article which reviews a 'non-turbo' 1.0 80ps which is the same year as my car or at least the facelift Mk7. Similarly, a driving instructor also reviewed a non-turbo Fiesta mk7 which is also 1.0l and 80ps.

First of all, the engine is indeed a 3 cylinder like the Ecoboost, so can't be a Zetec engine for example in which I'm aware that they're 4 cylinder. It's not a Studio or Style as they seem to be quite lower-spec lacking the front fogs and Bluetooth - my car has both of these. It seems some Zetec models also offer 80ps at 1.0 so thought I'd mention this. Finally a repair record from a Ford dealership does state the car is a 80ps.

My car has the standard Ford factory radio (not Sony) that offers Bluetooth as said above, heated front windscreen, aircon but nothing like heated seats or anything, so easily in the mid-spec range.

So in a nuthshell/if nothing above made sense: It's definitely a 1.0l 80ps with a 3-cylinder engine, petrol, and with econetic technology. Although it's mentioned online Econetic Fords still contain Ecoboost technology, my car does seem to be a non-turbo model judging by the 80ps which in my opinion slightly contradicts the fact that all Econetics are just Ecoboosts in disguise. Maybe it does have some Ecoboost but not the turbo feature, who knows?

Also worth mentioning the car was never involved in the safety recall done on Ecoboosts.

Interested to hear thoughts/opinions.

What does the vin plate on the driver's door pillar say it is?

Sounds as if you have a Zetec with the 1.0 80ps non-turbo 3 cy!inder. This is, as you say, basically an ecoboost without the turbo, but with port, rather than direct, fuel injection.

The Econetic Technology badge is just a bit of propaganda branding.  It doesn't really mean anything.  It was also stuck on diesel Focus's around the same time.  Seems to be just for the sake of fitting a badge where the EcoBoost badge would be on the EcoBoost models.

There is also an ECOnetic trim level, but that was only 1.6 diesels with sub 99g/km CO2 at this age and shouldn't be confused with the Econetic Technology badge.

If you're not already aware you need to be replacing the wet belts now. Unless they have already been done recently.

My 2013 zetec focus ecoboost  had the econetic badge and not the ecoboost badge.

Maybe they just stuck it wherever they wanted then. :ermm:

Yes, I recall seeing that on a few early Mk 3s.

Yeah, seem to recall the the ecoboost badge was put on mid 2014

I've attached the engine layout.

From looking in the owners manual it seems to be most similar to Ecoboost, but lacking the big pipe on the left hand side of engine

Correct.  As has been said above, the main engine is the same as an EcoBoost (3 cylinders, 2 wetbelts, even the fuel system is the same on these, unlike the 1.1 Ti-VCT that replaced it).  It's just missing the turbo, and as such, no need for an intercooler or big turbo boost pipes.

Yes, I was thinking of the later version (1.1) where the Ford spec sheet quotes a different system on the non turbo. The spec for the 1.0 makes no distinction on the fuel system.

It's clearly the 1.0 80ps non-turbo**, though, as said several times, and in view of the spec items mentioned (fogs, Bluetooth) most likely a Zetec. See brochure (if the link to pdf still works!):

**and, as Unofix mentioned, due belt change unless done already.

Ok I'm blind 😂

In my insurance app it does state that the car is a Zetec (79), which combined with the 80ps rules out the fact it is a 100% Ecoboost. From what other people have said the engine is the same as what you would find in an Ecoboost (meaning they could be swappable?), but ultimately lacking the turbo thus making it a standard engine in hindsight.

The PDF is actually quite useful. Thanks for attaching it.

I noticed that the baseline Zetec Fiestas don't have a factory fitted alarm. I was having a late lay-in yesterday (actually past 16:00) and got woken up by the sound of a car alarm. Looked outside my window and was coming in the direction of my car but the hazards weren't flashing as they normally would be.

Got the key and unlocked and locked the car. Alarm still sounding. I was about to go outside to start the car to reset it, and then it stopped.

Decided to investigate if it was actually my car or not. Done everything that should trigger an alarm like opening doors from inside when locked with key fob, double locking car so hazards flash twice, unlocking car through door as opposed to remote unlock. (doing this in my step dad's old Zafira would of set of the alarm). No alarm still.

I'm guessing it was one of the other cars in my street, as it does seem my car has no alarm after all...
