MOT failure help - suspension spring bracket rusted through?

Featured Replies

Hi I wonder if anyone can help?

Ou 2008 Fiesta failed MOT yesterday:

Do not drive until repaired (dangerous defects):

Nearside Rear Upper Suspension spring mounting prescribed area is corroded to the extent that control of the vehicle is likely to be adversely affected spring mount (5.3.6 (a) (ii))
Offside Rear Upper Suspension spring mounting prescribed area is corroded to the extent that control of the vehicle is likely to be adversely affected spring mount (5.3.6 (a) (ii))

The support bracket that attaches spring to underside of car has disintegrated on both sides. Does anyone know the best way to fix this? Not even sure what the part is called? The mechanic hadn't seen it before.

Many thanks!

We have seen this fault cropping up more and more as the Mk6 Fiesta's age.  Ford don't sell this part separately, so the choice is either cutting the brackets from a good used car in a brakers yard, or having a metal worker fabricate a new pair.  They then need welding in by a skilled welder.

If the car is of very low value and/or has other faults, it might be time to look at changing car instead of repairing.

Not an easy one to fix, but it can be done. See this thread on the same subject:

What a daft design
