Battery advice

Featured Replies

Hi all,

We have a 2012 plate Ford Fiesta that we've had for 5 years now. It had it's MOT back in November (we were hoping it would pass so we could get a quick sale) however it failed on a coil spring fracture and on it's emissions.

The fracture has been fixed, and the emissions is down to be sorted this coming week (it's a hole in the exhaust which we are hoping will be welded).

I've just gone to the car today (which is declared off road) and (I should've anticipated this happening as it's not been touched in 6/7 weeks) the battery is dead. Fob won't open the car, had to use the key, and then no lights or sounds on the dash when attempting to start it.

I only need to get it started to take it to it's appointment next week. We have another vehicle, however, it's battery is in need of replacement so don't want to risk draining it.

I was looking at buying either a jump start kit or a charger kit. Would someone with a bit more knowledge then myself be able to advise on the best option out of the two?

The battery wont be 'flat' as such, it's just that when its charge has drained to under 12 volts, the electronics don't work. Just put a cheap battery charger on it for a few hours and you'll see it'll burst into life again. Why Oh why don't ppl own a battery charger any more, that together with a foot pump/compressor are surely a minimum requirement to owning a car.

....and a Starting handle, and a clip on parking light 🤣

Many people don't have a suitable mains plug point near enough the car for a charger to be of any use.

Also worth noting that some modern Smart chargers don't charge batteries that have dropped below about 7.5v...which both of my Focus's did when left...  So for that reason I'd try a jump start on a battery that isn't showing any signs of life.

However, if you've already got some jump leads, it'll be much cheaper to jump it from another car with the engine running.  As long as it's run long enough to recoup the charge afterwards it shouldn't harm the battery on that one.  The GB40 costs a lot more now than it did when I bought mine sadly.

I was toying with getting one - I think they were £90-odd last time I looked, today they're £109.95 on Amazon, Halfrauds, etc, etc. £104.51 at Tayna and I found one hit at £89.95 but "out of stock" so just clickbait I guess!
