Fiesta 1.0 Ecoboost 2019. - Gearbox bearing or DMF failure?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,  so my wife’s 2019 Fiesta has started to make this noise. We picked the car up from a service where we were told that the mechanic had noted a grinding noise could be heard from the gearbox.    £1000 to investigate the issue…not fix, just investigate as a strip of the gearbox is required!   Anyway driving home I couldn’t hear anything and for the next few days no noise at all, despite covering 250 miles.   On day four, the car started to sound like a bag of nails when ticking over, or being driven.  Doing my own research I have come to the conclusion it could be either the main input gearbox bearing, or the Dual Mass Flywheel is in self-destruct mode 🙂

Here is a clip of the sound it’s making. The sound disappears when you depress the clutch.  https://share.icloud.com/photos/07cAbnd0wmimDCGlVk9SCxyjw

Any thoughts?

Well to give an update, Ford have stripped the gearbox, the main input bearing has perished and mashed up the gearbox!  So options are a rebuild, or a new gearbox. Ouch, not good for a 4.5 year old car with only 35k miles on the clock. Am hoping Ford Customer Relations will save the day with a good will gesture.

I hope they do

Well here’s another update, quoted £1800 to repair and rebuild gearbox for Ford dealer. Have spent a long time discussing with Ford Customer Care for goodwill and they have offered £680 or so, plus managed to get the Ford supplying/servicing dealer to add to the pot, so we are finally left with £880 to pay, so £1000 in goodwill….  Not a bad result, but still leaves a really bad taste in your mouth when the car has only done 35,000 miles.

Here’s a link to the YouTube video that I uploaded, just so that it is available for future reference.
