12V not working

Featured Replies

Hello guys,

I have recently bought a MK6 Fiesta as a beater car. I have quickly fallen in love with the way it drives and I want to take care of it a little bit as its taken care of me. The 12V socket doesnt work, I have tried to change the fuses but the F51 fuse is loose and doesnt want to take a 15A fuse - the F29 changed just fine and was intact at the point of changing it. I have bought a new cigarette lighter module and it still doesnt work, is it something to do with the wiring or is it to do with the missing fuse that wont go in?

Thanks in advance

Correction, its a MK5 1.4 16V from 2005

If the fuse is missing, there'll be no power going to it! When you say it's loose, just pinch the fuse holder connectors together so it can get a better grip.

Does F51 actually matter as every video Ive seen on this only mentions F29?

Correction to the correction !!

A 2005 Fiesta is a Mk6 here in the UK

2002 to 2008 is known as a Mk5 facelift in Europe.

Yes.

There are 2 fuses listed for the cigar lighter socket. They were used on different trim levels at different times. As far as I know they were never both used at the same time.

If you get a torch and have a very good look at the Fuse 51 location in your fusebox, you will probably find that only one end of the fuse holder has a contact fitted and the other end is just a hole. If that is the case then F51 is not used on your model.

So do you think it would be from the wiring?

With respect, that's a very ambiguous question. Would what be from the wiring?

If you intend to do fault finding then you are going to need a multimeter and importantly you will need to know how to use it. Otherwise get an auto electrician to take a look at the problem which should take less than an hour to investigate, and provided the issue is not a faulty GEM unit it should be an easy repair.

Interesting, but two things to note. (1) The model is a Fusion (mini SUV) not a Fiesta. (2) That is a 2010 model and not a 2002 to 2008 model.

That said, it does give a possible answer for why some versions might use either or even both fuses.

if you have access to a multi meter set it to 20v dc and take the plug off the back of the socket and test for voltage. i've known a lot of these be the socket and normally just needs a replacement fitted in and plugged in. if im not mistaken it will be a perm live connection so you should get voltage even with the engine off, however if you dont get voltage put the igition lights on and check again. if you dont get anything after that then it will be fuse/wire related but that is the easiest and first test you should do as you have already looked at the fuse that is there.
