Cracked gearbox casing

Featured Replies

Was looking to see if anyone’s had a problem like this before

Was driving my car when it kept popping out of gear/stalling/had loss of power. When I took it to a garage I’ve been told it looked like the gearbox casing had cracked and that had it mechanically failed, I had someone else from a different garage look at my car as I needed him to tow it from Fife to Edinburgh, he had no idea how it could’ve happened and said he’d never seen that happen before. At Ford they told me it has to be damage relating to a crash I had in January, the crash was at such a low impact and less than 15mph. I drove my car for a month after the crash before it went to a garage for repairs n had absolutely no problems with it. Ford told me to get an assessor out n he phoned me to say it seems like a mechanical failure as there’s no damage even close to the gearbox and it’s just the casing that’s imploded basically.

It’s a 2018 Ford Fiesta Titanium Eco Boost 1.0 litre I’ve got, any help would be really appreciated

Depends what the crash was, what and where did the vehicle impact?

You'll probably struggle now to get the insurance to accept that this is due to the impact, if a long time has passed.

Looks like you'll have to source yourself a second hand replacement

If the wheel hit an immovable object at 15mph, while in gear, that will put a huge strain through the gearbox and could have caused a minor crack in the casing which got bigger and bigger over time with the heat cycles and vibrations etc.

As above, I can't see how you'd prove it to the insurance all this time later, and they'll do anything they can to get out of paying.  So I suspect you'll have to cover the cost of the replacement gearbox.

Yep no worries thank you, I’ll add photos of the damage, the garage told me it was just cosmetic but when driving it through the month before the repairs  it started sounding off, I told the garage and the insurance but they didn’t look into anything just replaced the bumper n grills so when I got my car back in April I phoned again saying it still didn’t sound right n that’s when it was unable to drive

Ah right okay thought I’d have to, yeh the insurance and garage both don’t want to take blame, I’ve not drove the car since February and only got it back on 11/04 been unable to drive it since so been trying to sort this out for almost 5 weeks, insurance have asked for 3 seperate reports which has been such a hassle n taken so much time

Thanks for the reply

That impact doesn't look like it would cause gearbox damage.

You'll probably just have to source yourself a replacement box

On eBay, it looks like they're between £400-500

@HannahFletcher04

get the lowest mileage one you can find and, preferably, not one from a 140PS
