Focus 1.0 Ecoboost Ticking / Clicking Noise

Featured Replies

Hey Everyone.

I'm hopefully someone can help.

I have a Ford Focus 1.0 Eccboost. The car has been fine but I've noticed When Accelerating over 1500 RPM it starts to make a ticking / clicking noise. When I take my foot off the acceleration it stops.

When starting the car its quiet and it only happen when accelerating. Happens when accelerating driving and tested it stopped on the drive and makes the ticking/clicking noise

The noise seems to be behind the steering Wheel area.

I've check the oil and nice and clean.

Any ideas? just me know if any more details to help.

Thanks Donna

Can't really say without a bit of evidence

Is the clicking noise constant, or does it get quicker the more you rev the engine? You said it still clicked when you stopped on driveway, correct? Or just ambiguous grammar LOL Has it always made the noise since you had the car, or is it a 'new' noise?

Hi,

Sorry was trying to say it making the noise when moving and stationary (rev the engine) only when accelerating, to discount its something moving when driving.

When the car is on and no acceleration the car is very quiet with a very quiet engine.

Also I did put the car diagnostic into the car (only a basic one of my dads). No errors found.

From the info provided, I'd say it's a worn fuel injector.  Wouldn't suggest replacing any immediately without further diagnosis though.

ok thanks,

would it help If I upload the sound. I can do this tomorrow. As mention the noise seems to be driver side.

🙂

If you can take a video under the bonnet, with someone else revving the engine, that may help.  Even better if you can locate the specific area or part where the noise is coming from.  If you've got an engine cover fitted, I would recommend removing that first.

Hey guys,

Done a couple of records of what it sounds inside and outside.

Not that I've look to much under the car bonnet but the engine moves alot, doesn't look that normal to me.

Outside

Inside

That sounds awful inside, but I can't hear anything unusual from outside.

The engine does shake a lot on these, but the intercooler and radiator appear to have much more movement than I'd expect.  I would check the mounts for those asi suspect one is broken.  But I don't think that's what's causing the noise.

(PS - The engine cover wasn't removed so we can't see/hear the injectors individually)

Done another video above. When accelerating this time I didnt hear the noise inside that seems only to happen after about 1 mile down the road.

I dont know alot about cars but it confusing me.

I like to think I know a bit about cars but it's confusing me too!

I no longer believe it's an injector after that video.

Looking like it may have to be a garage job unless anyone else on here has a better idea.

I'm more concerned on the noise coming from inside. Seems only  happen on after a few miles and when I get over 1500 rpm.

Like when I did the last video it didn't make a noise inside but the car had been on the drive for a few hours. Like it only makes the noise when it gets to temperature.

I don't really know what to suggest unfortunately.

It doesn't sound like a misfire which would have been to do with fuel or spark.

It sounds more rotational like a bearing, which could be the turbo bearing or something to do with the belts.  Ideally need a mechanic to look at it when it's warm, and even take them out yourself for the test drive if you'd be comfortable doing that.

Hello.

Back again.

so it only starts to make the noise after 2 miles it's fine with start up.

Also my dad found this loose near the screen wash bottom right area.

Could that be making the vibration noise?

Thanks as always

It's highly unlikely that clip is causing the noise. To confirm that either close the clip, or if it's broken just put some tape around it to stop it moving.

I've listened to the noise files you've posted. The external one sounds like a noisy HP Fuel Pump - a very common complaint people report on these engines (Google Ecoboost noisy fuel pump). There are reports of it being heard inside the car, behind the car, by the drivers door etc.

The noise you recorded inside the car is hard to interpret but could be associated with the pump.

Personally, from what I've read, I wouldn't worry about it unless there are other unexplained issues (you haven't mentioned any other mechanical issues).

That loose clip is odd.  Added to the excessive movement at the radiator end, it could mean the AC radiator or intercooler are touching the cars chassis under acceleration and vibrating through the car.

I'd definitely have another look at the front end.  See how far you can pull the AC radiator (at the front end of that loose pipe).  If you can make it knock against any solid part of the car, that will be one source of noise.  (Not necessarily the noises picked up in this thread though.). The radiator and intercooler have rubber mounts to isolate them from the cars body when fitted correctly.

Hey guys.

Last 2 videos.

The 1st video is the movement at the bottom left on the car. Should it move that much?

2nd video should there be a something there (screw/ bolt) and that's why it moves some much?

Ah, I think we're making progress now.

No it shouldn't move that much.  I think that's the top mounting point for the intercooler.  If so, the mount has snapped off, which explains all the movement, and the reason that the AC pipe clamp has come open at the top end.

Have a look at the big black spike on top of these intercoolers, I think that's what should be under that rubber hole on yours.

Thanks @TomsFocus

Can I buy these anywhere (any link)

Also is it easy to fix? Could someone not mechanic do this?

And yes thats what's under that hole in the second video.

It's moulded plastic so the whole intercooler should be replaced unfortunately.

They are cheap to buy used on ebay, just check that any used ones aren't damaged in the same way if that's what you decide to do.  Also some of them have a separate fan fitted to the back, so check whether yours does or not before buying.  (The fan ones have extra brackets moulded on the intercooler so not interchangeable.)

Alternatively you can buy a new aftermarket one from somewhere like Autodoc - 0 results found for 1764929 - AUTODOC Search

Or the cheapest option would be to 'bodge' it by gluing something else on there to support it.  Or using cable ties to hold it in place.  The sky is the limit, use your imagination.

It's not a particularly difficult job, so can be done by a home mechanic with a bit of experience and a few tools.  Probably not a job for a complete novice though.

I may try to use cable ties to see if the noise goes when accelerating.

Then get a new part fitted, if the noise stops.

Good idea. Maybe pass the tie(s) under the top Intercooler pipe then around the bodywork cross member.

With regard the A/C pipe being shown moved side to side in the video, I had a look on my car and it does move like that, but is prevented from moving too much by the Intercooler (when kept in the right position by the plastic spike).

I noted the spike is really sturdy and I'm surprised it's broken; has your car ever had a front end accident?
