Fiesta mk8 ST sport mode not working

Featured Replies

Anyone help with this issue as the mode button does nothing.

Do you mean you can’t tell a difference or the button doesn’t even change anything on the display or show a sport symbol?

How long have you had the car? Has it worked before?

There seems to be a lot of debate on various forums as to what, if anything, this actually does.

The general understanding is it's supposed to firm up the steering, (though many report they can't tell any difference),  change the throttle map for sharper response (again, many report no great  difference) and add the odd pop and bang on gearchanges which seems more subdued on later cars.

Oh, and turn off start/stop which, as we know, seldom works anyway.

The most noticeable thing I've found (if you have a digital dash) is it changes from blue to black.

The handbook is of little use on the subject:

SPORT - ST

Sport Drive Mode  Vehicle settings suited for sportier driving.
Note:   Press the button on the steering wheel to directly select this mode.
Note:   Auto-start-stop switches off when you select this mode.

Hi it worked when I bought the car in February, the car had stood idle for a couple of months as I haven’t been able to drive.

now if I try pressing the mode button by the handbrake nothing happens.

Nothing happens when I press the mode switch by the handbrake.

That answers Alex's question, then. Wonder if this could be yet another low battery issue? Is everything else ok?

I thought there was an S switch on the wheel on STs

On the mk8 ST it is all on the steering wheel yeah. I had one of the very first ones and it was on the steering wheel.

EDIT: NOPE

Although the car hasn’t been driven it’s been regularly started, I am aware of the battery drain issues my son used to suffer with his.

Am I doing something wrong I thought you just pressed the mode button on the consul by the esc and stop start switch

No you’re right. I remembered wrong. Just went back through my photos and the Mk8 STs don’t have it on the steering wheel it’s down in the centre console.

I have it on the steering wheel on my Focus and I think the Mk8 facelift has it there.

I’d try making sure the battery is fully charged as that could be an issue. Do the other buttons like ESC work?

Yeah the other buttons work fine,it’s doing my head in battery is showing 12.4 bolts

You could try disconnecting the battery negative terminal for 20 mins. Let the car completely reboot all its modules.

Battery showing 12.4 volts and car was driven for 30 mins on Sunday.

the only thing been added to the car is ghost, tracker and the heater controls have been upgraded to the one with the lcd screen on the dial which all works fine

It does, yes. I posted the handbook extract from mine (facelift) - I should have used the earlier version with it on the console.

There is every chance either of those is causing the issue. The Ghost is listening for button pushes, although I'd have thought any compatibility issues would be long ironed out. Perhaps the install damaged the wiring from that area though.

Same with the heating controls.

Have these changes only been made since it last worked?

Yeah test drove the car and it worked, picked the car up a week later and the following day had the ghost and tracker fitted.

the heater control was fitted a few weeks later but the car hadn’t been driven until recently.

im thinking maybe swooping the old heater control back and see what happens

This was the heater control swap

It sounds like either the ghost, tracker or heater swap has disturbed something either physically or in software and is preventing the button from signalling to the car to switch modes.

All you can do is process of elimination.

I'm wondering about the heater panel. That's one from a car with automatic climate control installed in one with manual aircon, so unless a full conversion had been done (is that possible?) some of the buttons would effectively be dummies.
