Battery issues.

Featured Replies

I have recently had issues with my 2022 model Fiesta. The air conditioning stopped working occasionally. After having it checked out by my trusted garage, it transpired that it was a battery low issue and the air con was fine. It’s only now I have discovered it’s a common problem with most new cars due to the technology it has to support particularly if you only use it on short runs. Now that I have read the manual, all 400 pages, I can see why. Unbelievable number of features, most of which I will never use. Only solution apparently is to use a smart charger on a regular basis. Not impressed and £250 down. A p—ed off 82 year old. No mention of these sort of issues when you are buying the car and nothing in the manual….. that I can see!

Perhaps you would have been better buying an EV then you could charge it everyday 🤔

But even then, EVs still have a 12v battery in addition to the traction battery and we have still seen reports of problems with them  if the pattern and frequency of use doesn't agree with the cars charging system.😀

Unfortunately all this, as we have said many times on many threads, is a result of "intelligent" charging systems for environmental reasons, which simply do not suit many owners pattern of use, particularly if irregular/short journeys.

It's not a Ford issue as such, the Toyota Yaris thread on the same issue which I frequently quote has now reached 101 pages: https://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/217673-12v-battery-maintenance-issues-etc/#comments

Likewise, I don't think it's necessarily an issue of excess spec, though turning off features that are not used, where possible, won't hurt. The Dacia Sandero is often cited as a car without the frills, but I note there are many threads on that forum on battery issues, so I presume they also have "intelligent" charging no doubt shared with their Renault cousins.

Thank you for your comments. My son recently bought an almost new large EV Mazda. Same problem with the 12volt aspect of the car which is charged from the main batteries . Software update appears to have sorted that. About time Ford sorted it on their models.

Let's hope so, Mike. There are several threads on the Mazda MX 30 EV forum on 12v battery issues.

My local Ford dealership has now finally taken my late 2022 Fiesta in to establish the true cause of why the air con has stopped working at 3500 miles from new. My belief is it’s being shut down by the software as the battery charge has dropped below a certain level. After checking out the battery condition and checking out the alternator and air con system and associated items, they are now totally reloading the software, including any necessary patches to resolve any bms issues.  Hopefully tomorrow I get  the car back fixed. I will report accordingly later in the week.

Did I read that correctly, you spent £250 on a smart charger??

.......but you want to see it !!

It makes a cup of tea and a slice of buttered toast while it also charges the battery. Not like those lazy Maypole chargers 🤣

No…. I only spent £26 on a smart charger. The remaining money was on getting the air con and battery/alternator checked out and battery charged by my normal garage. It also included a pair of jump leads.

End of story for the time being !!!

Ford have downloaded the latest software to my car and now replaced the battery on the instructions of Ford Technical, apparently. Just a direct replacement of the old one. Took them 3 days total and I am not convinced that will be the end of story. However I will monitor the battery state on a day to day basis and charge if necessary as I do only generally do short journeys. The old battery was dropping 25% over night. If that start happening again the car will go straight back to the dealership.

I'm sure you've see this before, but just encase you've not here is the SOC table.

thought I should update this thread as it may assist others. Since Ford have replaced my battery (same as original) and updated the software as authorised by Ford Technical, all appears resolved. I have however since I only generally do short trips, turn off things that I don’t use or need, such as stop/start, radio and disconnecting my camera when parked up. At least I now have air con. working again in this hot weather.

Exactly the same, no aircon, just happened to my October 2022 Fiesta Titanium MHEV which only does a single journey of 10 miles or 40 miles or 80 miles each week. Luckily while waiting 10 months for delivery I had been following this forum and so was forewarned so I had a Maypole standing by. I topped the battery up with it and the following day the aircon was back.

Stephen @StephenFord will be very proud of you 🤣 That's another 10% commission for him 😉

Regularly getting 12.57 volts across battery now even when used on short runs. Have to assume firmware upgrade must have done something to affect battery management. No one will admit it though.
