Not going into gear sometimes

Featured Replies

Help please, just got myself a 2015 Fiesta Zetec S,Red edition 1L ecoboost with 52K on the clock,3 times now when i have come to a stop it will not go into gear no matter what i try, double clutch, slipping the clutch, wont go into any gear, first 2 times the car was not up to temp but 3rd time was well up to running temp and the only way to get it to go back into gear is turning the car off and on 3/4 times, and then it would run fine, gear changes very smooth every other time.allthough the clutch has a real tight biting point,my last Zetec S u nearly had to let the clutch out the whole way before biting point.

3rd time i was coming up to a roundabout, went to throw in from 4th into 3rd and it wouldnt go in,even tried going back into 4th and 5th but nope, had to coast to the side of the road and turn the car off and on 3/4 times before it would engage the gears again.

Full Ford service history and booked in with them beginning of next month under warrenty to get looked at but would be good to know what kinda fix it will be if anyone has had same experiance or know of a fix

Really ruining the pleasure of driving this little beast.

Many thanks in advance

The gearbox on your model is made by Cadbury's and with the warm weather it will have melted 🤣

Seriously the gearbox is known for having problems. Fastest fix is to replace the gearbox.

Doubt Fords going to change the gearbox under warrenty, well not before they go round the block looking at everything else first

They'd love to go round the block but they can't get the car in gear 🤣

It sounds from what you say about the biting point that the clutch may be have been replaced recently so there's always the possibility of something not being done correctly.

Otherwise, unfortunately the IB5 box is not the strongest and does have a reputation for issues when used with the Ecoboost, especially the 140 version.

I had this problem with my previous car. Turned out to be a clutch issue. After going round the houses many times 🙄 a new clutch and dual mass was fitted and it was perfect after that

Cable adjustment ? one controls neutral one controls push and pull. Stiffness caused by issues under front plastic plate?

just a thought. Have I got the right gearbox?

Nothing in the service history about new clutch being fitted recently Eric

***** problem is it only does it every now and then and sods law when it goes into ford it will be on its best behaviour until i get a mile down the road

Yep, I feel your pain!!!
It’s a nightmare when you are a woman with an intermittent fault that won’t perform when it goes in the garage!!!

Mine got worse over time until I could only select R, 1 or 2 with the engine off… great fun in a traffic jam!

I discovered someone had changed the clutch just before I got it but didn’t do the dual mass even though it had done 140k. I think it was on about 155k when I had both renewed again in a last ditch attempt to cure it before driving to the woods and burning it! 🤣

It was perfect after having the work done. Went on for another year or more until I sold it a month ago. I could change gear with just my thumb and index finger

I also had multiple gearbox oil changes as well which did nothing at all to help the problem

Don't know what you've got history-wise. It wouldn't necessarily be noted in the service book, more usually a separate invoice.

The box is the more likely candidate, there are lots of threads on the topic on the forum,eg: https://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/topic/74395-synchro-ford-fiesta-10-ecoboost/#comments

Latest update,i had the car booked in for the 1st of July as im on holidays soon, but last night and today it got a lot worse, sticking in gear, wouldnt go into gear and the worst bit was the clutch was not engaging, car in first,i put the clutch in to stop and it didnt do nothing, just went to the floor, luckily the lights changed and i didnt have to jump on the brakes to stall the car, pumped the clutch a couple of times and it came good again.after each time turned the car off and on again and it was good for a bit then something else would start, was a pain sitting at lights in 1st,clutch in and it still wanted to move, very like a automatic😒.

So its now at the ford dealership where i bought it from and they are going to look at it tomorrow, they couldnt be more helpfull and are confident they will get it sorted wether its a air lock/slave cylinder or new clutch.which is what there thinking.

Got a 2022 MG hs on loan
