Air Con question

Featured Replies

Hi, sorry I might have missed a setting but when I have Aircon off and just have the fan on. If I have it directed at windscreen and face, if I remove face so it's just directed as windscreen, the Aircon switches on?!

Tried this a few times and same happens every time.

Cheers Chris

On modern vehicles equipped with climate control it is intended to be left tuned on all of the time.

It's not climate control, it's just normal air con. I have never owned a car where you can't choose to just turn it on manually when you want to!

It happens on my car, and on many others. Even with fully manual heater & a/c control, the windscreen only setting is intended for fast de-misting, and this is much faster with a/c on to de-humidify the air.

I just find it a bit annoying that it then stays on when air vents are returned to normal, and I have to remember to turn it off. It does not seem to affect mpg noticeably when on, but must add some drag and consume some fuel if the compressor is turning when not wanted. Though it is advised to run the a/c regularly, to keep the compressor shaft seal lubricated, and maximise its lifetime before it starts to leak.

Don't think I've ever owned a car with AC where this doesn't happen.  Even going back to my 90's Peugeots they were setup the same way.  Windscreen only almost always brings the AC on.

On older cars you can either leave the dial one notch away from the windscreen symbol, or if you're irritated by the imperfection of that, put it on feet & windscreen instead.  But I've just remembered the Mk8 Fiesta has fixed buttons for direction.  So you can't put it on windscreen at all without the AC coming on.  That is a bit annoying...

👍🏻 with all cars I have had over the years i never came across that. Just come out of a works 2021 1 series and the air con was always off unless I put it on

Yes indeed re the mk8's fixed buttons - altho after you've pressed the windscreen button & the a/c comes on, you can always switch the a/c straight off... irritating but only one more button press... 🙂
