Fiesta MK7.5 not heating up + really poor mpg

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

My 2015 Fiesta Titanium X 1.0L (125hp) struggles to heat up. For example, if i'm simply sat in it it sometimes warms up ok but takes forever. However, if it gets driven out the driveway and carries on driving, it will not heat up for absolutely ages. A good 10 miles and the 4th bar may still not be showing. When the A/C is on, the engine fan is constantly at full speed. I was driving around my mates field yesterday and it warmed up just fine, and stayed warm until it got back on regular roads (A/C was off).  Unfortunately I cannot tell you how it is on motorways as I live on an island, which has a speed limit of 35MPH and no motorways...

Any ideas? I have not tried any solution yet.

Next thing, I am only getting a max of 23MPG. It was 13MPG the other day, and I am not driving it mentally either. I would say I am an average driver. I dont rev it high very often and change gears around the gear change indicator mark. The ecomode status in the menu gives me a good score.  I filled up the petrol tank to full and the computer showed up as only 189 miles till empty? I thought that cannot be right as some sources state it can get up to a max of 500-600 from a full tank.

Thanks a lot!

Hi Oliver,

I'm not that techy  - hopefully more tech-literate folks will reply soon - but a thermostat problem sounds likely from what you've said. If it's not warming up and mpg is poor that suggests it's running too rich to me, maybe because the thermostat is keeping engine on warm up phase too long.

But I could be wrong...🤓

With a 35mph speed limit, I'm guessing your journeys are pretty short as well?  I don't think you can compare MPG to cars driven on the mainland at higher speed over longer distances.

23mpg does sound very low though, I'd be expecting more like 35-40mpg from the info we have so far.

Replacing the thermostat does sound like a good place to start.

Yeah, although the speed limit is low and we cant get up to speed, my mums VW Polo still gets over 45mpg, as well as my friends 1.25l fiesta. Its due a service so i'll just have to get them to check it out and maybe replace thermostat.

Thanks

If its an Ecoboost don't forget it has 2 thermostats.

Done the thermostat on my 2014 1.0 ecoboost Fiesta not long ago as I had the same symptoms as the OP. I am not too mechanically minded but it was fairly easy to do even for me. £35 for thermostat and housing (thought I may as well change the housing while at it) from Dorset Auto Spares. There's plenty of youtube videos to help you.
