Black box on the windscreen ( a hairy old topic probably)

Featured Replies

If this has been covered before I apologise !

We have a 2017 old style 1 litre EcoBoost and it has a black plastic box attached to the windscreen near the rear view mirror as per the pic below. In the warm weather it has taken to falling off and hanging by the wire which feeds from the box into the headliner.

1. Can anyone out there who is suitably qualified or experienced give me a definitive answer as to what this box does? So far " Dr Google" via a variety of forums has come up with a. A module related to the windscreen demister b. A module relating to the Emergency Assistance system ( some kind of GPS transmitter, though our car doesn't have any satnav capability). c. A sensor box relating to automatic windscreen wipers

2. Relating to "1", , What is the best way to stick it back onto the windscreen ( It's held on by double sided tape at the moment. Is that likely to have been a botch job by a previous owner or did it leave the plant that way?)

3. Relating to "2" does it have to be mounted flat and hard against the inside of the windscreen?

Many thanks in advance !

Your car doesn't have auto wipers.

That box is for the emergency assist system.  And that really is how they left the factory.  Just stick it back on with 3M foam tape and it'll be fine.

PS - We'd generally refer to that model as a Mk7.5 in the UK.  'Old style' gets confusing on a model that's been around for 50 years.

I can recommend 3M VHB, it will NEVER come off again

Thanks for this. I'm aware that it was called something like Mk 7.5 but I thought that a bit weird But there ya go !

I always assumed it was the rain detector.

The rain sensor is fitted right in the middle below the mirror mount.  Fiesta's with those have an additional slim cowling between the roof and the mirror base so it's easy to tell which ones have auto wipers.
