MK2.5 upgrading stock speakers while keeping stock head unit

Featured Replies

HI, I have a 2009 Ford Focus MK2.5 which has only 1 working speaker currently at the moment, so I was looking into changing them.
I have the Travelpilot FX head unit which of course has no information of whatever on it's power and output so I'm looking for other people who may have done the same or something similar like this to their cars.
I'm currently looking at the JBL Stage 2 604C speaker set that are said to be capable of handling 45W RMS. But the catch is that I don't know if that number is per full set or per speaker and tweeter combo.(Because I read both claims on different websites.)
My stock speaker is a 3M5T-18808-AE 25W 4ohm.
Hope someone could help me out, I'm a beginner at audio stuff.

the stock speakers whilst still working (the rears self destruct for fun - like a proper german car) are perfectly good - but the OEM head units are an under-powered pile of budget lifeless junk not fit to put in a skip

buying demanding speakers (aka most joke aftermarket high power rated stuff) will turn it to unbearable, distorting, quiet rubbish

what few realise is a massive power amp and ordinary speakers will go twice as loud and sound ten times better, than the other way around... speakers sound great when bossed about by a big amp that can drive them properly and control them at the end of their stroke... low powered amps smash speakers into the end stops, sound atrocious and fry the coils

for most buy a sony branded ford head unit - and the upgrade is 4 fold over what it left the building with

you might have an OK head unit - just buy some used OEM speakers - at the back the metal frame that holds them together is the clue - pretty sure the gold anodised ones last - the silver ones self destruct (just get a set the opposite of what's in the car)  u need a drill and a pop rivet gun

I see what you mean.

I popped now each speakerfrom the car, and tested wether the cables still work.
All spakers part numbers end with a AE
Those with a gold anodised back end with AD indicating that they're older and the E was meant to be a revision in sound and quality.
I like how the OEM speakers sound, so I'm just curious wether anyone has the AD ones in their cars, do they sound the same, or good?

Try to find a set from a Ghia, Titanium or ST Spec car.

These all had higher quality speakers fitted from the factory.

I recently took a set of four from an 05 plate Titanium at a breakers. All four still have continuity when tested with a multimeter. I haven't had time to fit them to the car yet.

I posted some more info in this thread recently.

when her rears popped - I put the gold ones in, they sound the same - but still work 7 years on !

The standard head unit will respond to the OEM fit Pioneer speakers very well
