Turbo over boast

Featured Replies

Hi I have got a 2009 S Max 2lt tdci I keep getting fault code p2263 . Car goes into limp mode and light comes on but after a little while goes out of limp mode and then engine light goes off. Taken to garage and they said it is the turbo over boast so needs turbo changed. Can't afford this but was talking to someone and they said about the turbo boast control valve. Any one know if this could be the cause and not the turbo it self please

Change the valve first and see if it fixes it, if that's what you think it is.

If not, change the turbo, as advised

Overboost is usually caused by VNT vanes sticking with carbon deposits on diesels.  The turbo can be stripped down and cleaned internally, but it's a lot of hassle and probably cheaper to just replace it given garage labour rates.

I'm not sure if the vanes on this particular turbo are normally open or normally closed.  Usually they default to open, so if you disconnect the boost solenoid (put a screw in the end of the vac pipe) you could then take it for a careful test drive.  If it's got no power at all, we know the vanes are open, and cannot cause overboost, suggesting that it is control issue.  If it's very nippy with no turbo lag, we know the vanes are closed, and are probably stuck like that, suggesting a turbo fault.

Turns out I have got 2 turbo boast control valves on this car. Will change both and see what happens.

They aren't both for turbo control.

I think the second one is for the throttle body on that engine.  You should be able to follow the vacuum pipe across the front of the engine to it.

Phoned Ford and it is £240 for one or £21 on ebay. So going to buy one of ebay to try. Happens when going slow as well only doing about 20 mph so not using much power

A Mityvac (or similar) on the vacuum pipe to the turbo and inspecting for movement of the vanes would confirm any sticking and it could also register the amount of vacuum as the engine is revved checking the function of the valve?
Forscan can also display the vane position without any dismantling using live data?
I don't know if any of that will help but that would be my starting point i.e. see if the vanes are moving, that there is feedback to the ECU and some indication if the valve is functioning?

Agree with the next step of replacing with a cheap valve but pointless if the vanes aren't able to move?

A pity as I would like to know if my actual diagnostic suggestions were ever taken up rather than just changing bits with no evidence!

Thanks @unofix, it would be lovely if everyone posted a solution regardless of what it is…. I sold the car…. I replaced the turbo … it just started working again.
