Featured Replies

hi all.

I want to wire up my spot lights on my xr3.

I have spot lights fitted and there is wiring there but I don't trust it as it looks awful and I will remove it.

I want to know if I can wire them up to a ford switch part number 82gg15k23e7aa and If I can does anyone know what all the numbers are on the switch,

1,2,3,4,5,6, pin 4 is blank with no pin what I want to know is what do the others do ????

any help please.

I had factory fit spotlights on my 1982 XR2 as well as my 1984 XR3i. Both were simply additions to the main beam, and not switchable separately. Of course, you can wire them to a separate switch if you wish...

Spot lights or "Driving Lights" as Ford refer to them are wired via a relay and connected to the High Beam circuit. There is not normally any switch fitted on the dashboard.

UK vehicle lighting regulations stipulate that driving lights must be wired and configured in such a way that they can only be operative when the High Beam is on. There is of course the option that the control wire for the relay could be connected in series with a switch on the dashboard so that the driving lights may be turned on/off while the High Beam is on. They can not be configured so that they can be used on there own, or when only the Low Beam (dipped beam) lights are on.

Back in the day when these cars were on sale, you could but a proper Ford wiring harness for fitting the driving lamps. It consisted of a 35A relay that you fitted under the bonnet on top of the front wing on the passenger side. There was a short earth wire (complete with ring crimp) that was secured under the fixing for the relay. Then one heavy power cable (red) with inline fuse holder that was connected direct to the battery positive. Lastly there was a small white control wire that was connected via a pre-fitted ScotchLoc to the High Beam headlight wire on the passenger side. The main positive supply for the driving lamps came off the terminal on the relay and each lamp was earthed via the mounting bracket.

To the best of my knowledge there wasn't a wiring diagram, only a simple set of instructions which is basically as I described above. Between 1980 and 1992 I fitted many sets of these driving lights both to my own cars and for others.

Wish I had your knowledge back in 1979 when I 1st wired up a couple of Cibies on my Datsun 120y. I simply spliced them into the main beam wiring, and wondered why after 10 seconds the wiring loom began to smoulder LOL (Before internet and I never knew what a 'relay' was!). Of course, a great lesson, and I narrowly saved my car from destruction... 😂 They ended up useless anyway as I mounted them directly onto the bumper, so they vibrated like hell! You do alot of stupid things when you're 17!
