Powerflex rear axle bushes.. insurance?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I put Power flex bushes to my car 18 months ago as my car was literally rear wheel steering 🫣(Took 8 hours to do on a Friday night in February 😂, so didn't really want to do that again).

Insurance came up for renewal this year and was thinking back to it... They last way longer than the originals, but they're purple. Pretty obvious to not be standard, if there was an inspection by insurance.

They're firmer too but I've only get a 1l ztec, so hardly bombing it down.

So I declared them to the first insurer I went with... insurance void.

Went with another one, but declared it under maintenance.

I'm thinking of insurance for next year, and don't really want to be stuck having to put it on modified policy just because of rear bushes...but I also don't want to change them back to OEM because of the faff.

I've now gone with modified insurance for the year, but wondered what everyone else's experience with this is?

Most on here will tell you to declare it. All about your attitude to risk. You've now fessed up to it so it will be on the insurance database, so deniability now for you is out of the question. Me? I'd have kept quiet, said I bought the car like it - it's not as if you've secretly put in a V8 turbo engine in it, it's a perfectly road worthy suspension bush. But like I said, most on here are risk averse and will advise you were a good boy to own up...

Thanks, I know for future now.

That suppose that gives me until next year to decide on putting the OEM bushes back in or keep declaring it.

Unless you are changing everything, I would always replace like with like.  Otherwise you are introducing imbalance into the car, any car.  Although it took you 8 hours the first time, next time will be hugely less, as you know what you are doing, bolts are not frozen, etc etc.

As said, balance of risk on this one would have been to keep quiet, but your honesty is admirable.

How many years did the OE bushes last?  How long are you keeping the car?  Chuck some OE back on, and feel good about yourself 🙂

(you don't need to buy bushes in a Ford box - just choose quality manufacturer on Autodoc/ECP/carparts4less/GSF/etc)

yes...I didn't have an impact driver at the time haha.

Had the car September 22, and did the bushes 6 months later as it was just unbearable to drive, even after alignment. Was driving an hour each way to work...pretty...sketchy.

The originals would've been on the car for 10 years. There was other things I had to do but that was the biggest. It just hadn't been looked after.

Thanks, I'll put them them back to OEM next year and go for D2P for them. Had top mounts from them and they seem to be good quality.

ill probably have it a couple more years so it wont be waste. Just waiting on insurance to come down.

Thanks Jon
