New ST Line owner.. wet belt questions!

Featured Replies

There used to be a rule that spares had to made to last 10 years after production, I'm not sure that's still the case though.  They could easily be stored somewhere, I highly doubt that would be the UK as land costs are so high over here, but they could have been stored somewhere in Eastern Europe near the Ford plant in Romania for example.

I'm sure I read somewhere (possibly Pumaspeed website) that there was only a finite number of brand new wetbelt engines left.  Once they're gone they will all have to be remanufactured from used ones.

I think that's about it. Same tune as the 1.5 Puma ST afaik. Only failure I've seen photo evidence of was on the Fiesta ST forum. That was on the very early Mk 8 1.5 ST with the gear, rather than

Swerving off topic (as usual) but that's an interesting point. I have an idea that the "rule" was more of a voluntary thing. More recently though, the EU came up with a "right to repair" which meant parts had to be available for 10 years. Afaik it only applied to certain appliances, not cars, though.

I've been pondering this one lately. Quite a few people talk of hanging onto cars "until they die" (not sure if they mean the car or the owner😀), but I wonder how long parts (and people with the knowledge to fit them) will be available in the brave new world of Zero Emission Vehicles?

Going back nearer the topic, and the Ford document that Mathew linked to earlier. I see it mentions "support" without going into detail as to what they mean by that. If "support" continues to mean "x" % discount off a sky-high bill for a new engine, which some members have been offered, it's not a lot of progress. In the cases we've seen, the owners would still have been better off sourcing a new engine elsewhere, Pumaspeed, etc.

From what I've seen on the Facebook groups it has meant them paying out the full cost of a replacement engine (parts and labour).

It does say 100% support, which presumably means 100% of the costs of the belt related work.*

It also says not to use the dealerships goodwill budget, which is what I think was previously used to cover the small percentages they were offering in at least some cases.

*I do wonder whether things like vac pumps will still be classed as an additional item that the customer needs to pay for.  Or anything else that they find broken that isn't directly part of an engine replacement.

So it does - dunno how I missed that!

Still wonder at the choice of words. It says CRC will support 100% of the repair cost" (my italics) rather than something unequivocal such as "cover", "pay", or "reimburse". And, as you say, the other stuff that could have suffered consequential damage.

I guess the only way we'll find out for sure is if someone makes a successful claim. Other than "one owner from new" cars, and those that have stayed in the dealer network for their whole lives, though, I can see that the full service history could be very difficult to prove given the current situation with Data Protection and reluctance to pass on full documentation to new owners.

Don't read too much into the wording as this memo isn't intended to be read directly by customers but by dealers and so will be using language that is common parlance for them.

I'm probably getting ever more cynical as I age, but about 10 years spent dealing with Ford on fleet vehicles taught me to scrutinise carefully what they said (and didn't say) in documents, internal or external. My predecessor used the term "trickier than a bag of monkeys" when handing over to me!

After some of the heart rending stories we've seen on here, it would be great to hear from an owner who has had full compensation.

A quick update on my ST Line..

So even though the dealer I bought it from did an oil change some six months ago, I decided for piece of mind to have a new oil change done

and strain to look for belt deterioration etc. A local garage here that I know, was very familiar with the wet belt issue, they actually said they were

recommending replacing the belts on 50k miles rather than waiting on the ten year mark, although people here are suggesting doing it on 8 year mark

of course. He's saying they have seen deterioration as early as 50k miles. Mine has just hit 45k. Long story short, no sign of belt going bad so all good

for now. They charged £60 to do that, so not bad for the piece of mind. I think the advice here to do the change on the 8yr mark will be solid.

They did also say it will be around 1k to change the belt, using genuine ford belts etc

So I may end up keeping the car after all, with regular oil changes and checks, it shouldn't be a problem for a while. For anyone else looking at this topic,

I would advise for the relative low cost of doing the oil and checking it, just do it as soon as you buy the car regardless of how recently the oil was changed.

On a different topic Eric, do you have any experience dealing with Transit vans? I need to find a new back door for our 2015 high top

Transit. Ford want £900 for a new one. Is there anywhere specifically that is good to go to for this?

Ebay has been hopeless so far. Cheers

Assuming you are asking the OP, they've not visited the site since last March, so an answer is unlikely.
