Type 9 gear selector help

Featured Replies

Hi.  I've got a Capri 2.8i with 5 speed type 9 gearbox.  The push down function to select reverse doesn't work and as 1st and reverse are so close together it is all too easy to slip it into reverse instead of 1st - scaring the car behind!  It has a quick shift kit fitted, the type that just a spacer plate under the gear lever, but removing this doesn't seem to make any difference.  I can't see anything that could be broken or missing.  Anyone had similar issues or know a possible solution?

I think the reverse lock-out on these is part of the gearstick assembly but don't have access to parts catalogues that far back.

Is there any chance you could take a couple of pictures of the bottom end of the gearstick?  I suspect that the lockout part has worn or broken if plastic (people ram them into reverse!) or the spring that should hold the stick up is too weak to work correctly now.

Can the Capri Club help ?

They advertise this:

https://www.capriclub.co.uk/Quick_Shift_Kit_Road_Use--product--5.html

Which I assume you had fitted.

The Granada Haynes (1245) has some photos, but nothing obvious jumped out at me.

The Sierra Haynes (903) refers to a modified selector locking mechanism which might be relevant.  XROC might have a guru.

As Tom suggests, it sounds like a saggy spring, or worn plastic component.

I had 2 x 2.8i Capris, loved 'em, especially the oversteer.......
