Hi guys

I have focus MK2 and today drove it to shops and car making a noise and lost most power steering fluid. Managed to drive it home as was local and called out the AA.  The turned up and said the metal power steering pipe from pump to rack was leaking and they couldn't do it as ford only part. 

I've called ford and it's 190 pound for the pipe as u got buy 2 and union nut. 

Do you guys know if that's a good price or where I could get one from and have any if you tried fitting one yourself, is it easy or hard.

You  might be able to get a hydraulic engineering company to make you a new one

Breakdown man didn't recommend breakers yard/second hand as it could go again and he's been called out to two already today

Can they be done yourself on MK2 focus anyone had any experience doing this. 

Would I also need to change the power steering pipes and pump. 

The pump would usually be fine.  But if it was driven home then it would have been running dry and that may have caused excess wear inside.  There's no way of knowing now.

The pipes can be replaced at home but it's not easy to do on a driveway.

The high pressure pipe is single use on these.  You must screw the new nut into the pump first.  Then push the new pipe through it.  Do not put the nut on the new pipe first.

Ford said 190 pound for pipe and euro said 160 plus fluid.

Been in contact with mobile mechanic and he said 100 pound to fit it. 

I can borrow some axels stand of a friend but as I got sloped drive and if back it on all the weight shifts to back and makes it bit easier to get under it.

Have u changed them tom before on yours, was it easy and long to do them. Breakdown man said there bee hatch to do

I haven't changed any on this setup.  Only the 1.6 petrol has this fully hydraulic setup with single use pipes.  All other engines on Mk2 use an electro-hydraulic setup with an electric fluid pump under the headlight instead.

The main issue with these on a driveway is physically reaching the rack either by fully laying underneath or by reaching in through the wheel arch.  Then it's a bit awkward to manoeuvre the rigid pipes out.  But the most important thing is to remember the nut goes first, then the pipe goes through it.  Very common mistake for people to put the nut on the pipe first.

Ordered a part of auction site flea bay and it's arrived and the silver nut is on the pipe it still rotating on the pipe. Could be the new modified version

You can try to remove the nut by lubing it up and gently teasing it off without damaging the pipe.  Then just buy a new nut for a couple of quid from a Ford dealer if there's one local.  Can't just use a normal nut as there's a gripper section inside these.

I wouldn't attempt to fit it in it's current state, but ultimately it's your car and your choice.

Sent pics to mechanic he said it's possible with nut on but a pain to do.

80 quid to fit it.

This is vct engine with nut off its a socket with it on its fiddly with spanner. 

 

It's not that simple.  The nut has a gripper inside.  It's designed to be pushed straight through once.  If you start turning it with a spanner it'll weaken the gripper and probably leak eventually.  In addition to being a pain to fit.

Been in contact with seller said that nut shouldn't be on the pipe. Screw that nut in first then push it on. 

Spoke to the mechanic again and he thinks it's a return item that's been used, sent back and sent out to me. 

Not good from a flea bay seller, been offered a refund and postage paid.

Always worth considering.

I had an old SAAB 900 and might need a reolacement power steering hose. Took the car to my nearest Pirtek place.

They took one look at it and said they could make up a replacement one easily with the correct end fittings.

They would not fit it and their usual guarantee would not apply. Neither of these restrictions was a problem to me.

Sold the car several years after and never needed to replace that pipe.

Hi guys

His long does it take to fit power steering pipes from pump to rack. Mechanics want 80-100 pound to fit them. 

Also as I got a open thermostat still gauge barely moves unless stationary, does taking out the power steering pipe make easier or no difference to the installation of thermostat when it's done.

How the hell do you get the union nut off fords ain't made it easy. 

I moved the coolant tank, took out the power steering bottle and pipe. Still can't get to the union nut.

Please

You need small tools, or flexible ones.  As a last resort you can just cut the pipe off and put a socket over it, but don't do that unless you have a backup plan for if it goes wrong.

But how hard do u have u push the pipe in. I've tried leverage with a bar, small toffee hammer, by hand, by hand with a cloth. 

It won't go in.
