One of the known problems with the early Ecobooms is that when coolant is lost the sensor sits in an air space and doesn't sense the cylinder head temperature. By the time it detects the rise in temperature it's usually much too late. I believe there was a modification introduced involving a level sensor in the coolant tank.

Just given this a bit more thought MJT, am I right in assuming that once the garage replaces the coolant the sensor should start working ok again?

I was thinking about perhaps buying an ODB reader so I could check periodically for any issues, but I'm not sure where to start re a decent brand or anything.

Use FORScan. Either the windows based laptop version or one of the mobile phone versions.

FORScan (for use with Windows Laptop) : https://forscan.org/download.html

It's what many Ford owners use including some Ford technicians.

I don't think Id've thought about doing reversing, really useful stuff, will definitely do this with any test drive going forwards, thanks

I'm not sure if that was intentional on your part, but it made me smile ☺

Hi, 2014 MK3 Ford Focus Ecoboost 1.0 here. I also noticed a problem with coolant significant coolant loss however but no explosions. I noticed first when my car's heater would no longer heat the cabin unless I'm driving high speeds on the motorway. It's only blowing cold air under normal driving.

Coolant hasn't been changed in the 4 years of driving it and it had the pink coolant inside so I'm guessing it could be simple as it losing effectiveness and needing a flush or requires a new thermostat. Maybe also new cap and/or new coolant reservoir. I didn't notice any puddles on the ground.
