Has anybody retrofit the Ford Focus Mk4 glove box CD Player

Featured Replies

Is there anybody out there who has successfully done this, I’m sure I’ve seen a previous post with someone who has.

Without going into too much personal reasons for wanting to do this, I don’t need “use a USB or Car Play” advice as a solution. I have my reasons so let’s leave it there, if you can help great 😊 if you can’t then this thread isn’t for you.

I have managed to acquire the rare Unicorn 🦄 find of both a replacement glove box which is required and only available as a manufactured extra from factory to fit the Focus Mk4 and the single slot CD Player also only a factory fit option or from a salvaged/ scrapped Focus and which differs from the Fiesta Mk8 CD Player as it is wired by a connection on the players side rather than the players rear due to the limited space in the glove box.

Now I know from factory the wiring was incorporated into the main front dashboard loom so any wiring loom will have to be bespoke made, though Ford do sell a kit for the Fiesta which shares the same wiring as the Focus so maybe able to tailor one from a salvaged Fiesta or buy one of these.

I’ve examined the wiring diagrams for the Focus Mk4 and can confirm the wiring from the grey CD Player 10 pin connector to the Sync3 audio unit match. All wires are counted for at both connections accept for SHIELD Wire 5 - ‘DMEA9 (*) - CTRL MOD - REMOTE CD # AUDIO D ???? which doesn’t seem to be present at the Sync3 connector, why I’ve yet to find out…. anybody know what this wire is or for?

So Im not at install stage yet but do want to gather the relevant hardware to progress further before reaching the programming step which I assume will require some form of Forscan activation too.

Im no stranger to retrofits already done my BLiS blind spot mirrors bespoke loom wiring soon to be installed but audio equipment I am a virgin to so all your help is appreciated so thanks in advance. Looks forward to your positive replies.

The Focus Mk4 CD Player has a side mounted loom connector port.

Differing to the Fiesta Mk8 CD Player which connects at the rear.

Though they both use the same style connector and same colour connecting wires.

Well reading through the details of what you have and also the schematics I think you have it covered. You will need to make a change in the APIM (I expect) using FORScan to tell the system that it now has the CD player fitted but that should be straight forward.

The lack of the above connections doesn't surprise me on a vehicle fitted with Sync3, as the commands to the CD player will be over the Canbus system. I suspect those wires are probably used on systems with lower versions of Sync or even perhaps on vehicles without Sync.

Good Luck 👍

Come back and tell us all how you get on with the install.

Yeah the communication between the CD Player > Sync3 appears to be a straight forward connection despite the loom being missing, I expect once I distinguish everything (where to & where from CAN HS3, Power, Ground & Audio wires) Im hoping I can then do my Forscan homework to see what is required to communicate everything to the car.

I just need clarification so 🤞🏼 the install goes to plan. I’ll certainly do a step by step if I attempt it solo though I suspect I may call in help.

As for the DMEA9 (*) wire, I’ve been assured this wire goes nowhere and is used to create the SHIELD interference protection the Twisted Audio cables in the loom must have. So thanks to the inbox user who specified this - you know who you are 👌🏼

After doing a bit of browsing I did come across these databases on a CyanLabs Asbuilt forum

https://cyanlabs.net/asbuilt-db/acm2/

Here it speaks of:-

CD ENABLE MUTE RADIO CONFIGURATION (MRC) - and under the CD selection it has the following values:-

Location 727-01-01

Values

• 0 = Internal CD. MRC Disabled

• 1 = Internal CD MRC Enabled

• 2 = External CD or No CD, MRC Disabled

• 3 = External CD or No CD, MRC Enabled

So I imagine selection 2 or 3 will be the one that applies but no idea why MRC needs to be disabled or enabled.

What do you think?

@unofix is it possible to request users with a Mk4 CD Player to share AS Built info to find parameters that are needed to activate a retrofit.

I'm afraid there is no single Focus MK4 with CD player! You need to look in other models with Sync 3.

What do you mean Piotr I already have the glove box & CD player that was fit to a Mk4 Focus Vignale so that cars VIN must have an factory option AS Built data surely or is my understanding of AS Built info incorrect.

So, not in my country though :)

Fiesta MK8 and new Puma has this CD player as an accessory mounted after production. Factory AsBuilt may not contain this option, but definitely it exists.

The Focus Mk4 CD Player differs from the Fiesta (rear plugged connector) not sure about the Puma CD model but the Focus connector plugs into the side not rear so is specific to the Mk4 Focus I just need to find a UK Spec similar.

In theory yes, but the problem would be finding someone who has a CD player fitted.

Do you know the registration number of the vehicle that the unit came out of ?

Ok I’ve managed to find another Mk4 owner with a Factory installed CD Player who was willing to share his As Built info whats the easiest way to compare the parameters for CD compared to mine?

I'm not aware of a simple way other than looking at the data side by side using FORScan. I'd start by looking at the BCM.

@unofix if the cyanlabs info here is anything to go by the comparison does show a value difference on 727-01-01

looks ok, makes sense. Change is for external CD

I also found this info from a Graham17 from the Forscan forum, sadly I am yet to get a free trial of Forscan but wont be doing that till I'm set to install my BLiS sensor modules - so I can't directly ask this user Graham17 for further info.

Do I need to check these locations below that Graham suggests too for a AsBuilt comparison?

7DO-01-02, 7DO-04-01, 727-01-01, 727-01-02 & 727-04-03

If so I have found these parameter differences.0FE30B12-A6F1-416B-89AE-AEC3CD66E0BF.thumb.jpeg.97a93b8ad39e9ce7f2a5bf9508ee0713.jpeg

Yes Piotr I drew the same conclusion above for location 727-01-01 which seems apparent to both External & Internal CD Player but wondered what MUTE RADIO CONFIGURATION (MRC) would actually do if DISABLED? The location doesn't look like a specific enough activation for turning the CD Player ON/OFF to me though I could be wrong 🤷‍♂️ ??

So, my tips:

APIM:

image.thumb.png.128d3a1d58b87a48ba7d3dba898146c2.png

set to odd what ever value is there. I.e. add 1 to the current value if it is even. In your case 0 to 1

ACM:

727-01-01 xxxx xxxx *x <- set 3rd bit, i.e. add four to the current value. in you case,  change 1 to 5.

I'm sure, that the only changes required. But the final verification will be to do it in a real car. Good luck.

Do I assume 'BLADDERS' quantity is the number of speakers my B&O system has? Which I believe is 10 via 9 channels for the Mk4 ST

Do not bother about other bits, only one has meaning for CD player.

@Piotrmod I've managed to put together a little spreadsheet of AsBuilt data from a similar Mk4 Focus ST 2020(20) 2.3 hatchback with CD Player and every other factory optional extra  and compared it alongside my AsBuilt data FOCUS 2020(20) ST 2.3 hatchback without CD Player as well as another Focus 2019 (69)(2.0 ecoblue Vignale etstate with CD Player) so I should now have the right parameters to change with Forscan when programming it in.

Lines:

4 & 6      - 7D0-01-02 - APIM = CD Player

13 & 15   - 7D0-04-01 - APIM = CD Player

80 & 82 - 727-01-01 - ACM = CD Player

Seem to be the only parameters that have changed from my ST with no CD player compared to the ST with the CD Player. Though I suspect there is an IPC change because I've been told the CD track playing does display in the instrument cluster like the radio and I think that might be on Line 34 & 35 as this doesnt show the Vignale for this comparison Line.

What do you think?
