Ford Focus Mk2, Engine Malfunction scanner codes

Featured Replies

Hello, this is my first post here so apologies if this is in the wrong place.

Ive had a problem with my car this past week where I will be driving normally for about 5 min then I will get 'Engine Malfuntion', 'Reduced Acceleration' and a traction control warning lights pop up. I  have been reading about the common instrument cluster soldering fault but as of now the car will still start normally.

Ive had the car scanned and from the results the garage have suggested that I should get a new battery. Ive fitted the new battery and I still have the same problem. I also had an engine warning light pop up the last time I have driven it.

Can anyone give me any suggestions to fix this?

I have just bought a house and cant really afford a new car right now. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you for reading.

That's almost certainly a cluster fault.

...battery /  earths / corrosion / connection issues

and or the usual worn out cluster

disconnect the battery - remake all earth points from battery to car body, and any others you can find, remove and refit fuses tighten fused links - remake multiplug connections and look for a chaffed loom...  if all OK - refit charged battery and kill all codes - drive ten mins see what it says now

@Botus I will try all that before sending the cluster off. Thanks for the help I'll update when I know more.

@TomsFocus From what I have read I would agree. I've found that guys eBay listing that does the refurbishment and I will send it off if I can't fix it myself.

don't trash it trying to penny pinch

most solder u buy is some super high temp crap and you destroy the board before it melts - sure if you know what ur doing but go gentle

@Botus Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. What would be the best way to confirm it is the instrument cluster? Just remove it and look for visible cracking or is there a way to test it?

Ive had a look at it today and confirmed that I have a faulty instrument cluster by slapping the top of the dashboard while the car is running. The gauges reset and it causes the engine malfunction message to appear. I'm going to look into getting the solder joints repaired.

@rd457 Offers a postal service for this if you can't find anyone local.
