Mk2 Escort rusting away on driveway.

Spotted in London recently. Image from street view shows it being there at least since 2008, probably much longer.

Looks like a 1.3 GL, in Roman Bronze metallic, with a Tabacco vinyl roof . Quite possibly the last year of the Mk2 model on a 'W' plate. 😀

Definitely a GL👍

Looks about 2 years old😆

There's far too much of that left to have been sat outside since 2008!

I assume that the 1.3 GL is not a sought after model?

If it was something unusual, I would think someone would have made them a good enough offer by now.

I'd be happy with it 🎉

I used to have one exactly the same. Reg: ECN 957W

Thought the GL had the long rubber insert along the bumpers front & back ? Ghia's having the same but also with the rubber over-riders........

You can tell all that by that terrible image ? Man I need yer eyes 😁

Just out of interest I had a metallic maroon L 4 door Escort with all the same chrome bits with the bland all boring chrome bumpers.

My second car was very similar but was the 1.6 Ghia in metallic blue with a black vinyl roof....still one of the best car's I have ever owned...NWJ601R 😍

I certainly can. Well perhaps a bit of a guess on the engine size, it could be a 1.3 or a 1.6 but mostly the GL was sold as a 1.3

My first car was a 1.3 L 4 door, this also had all the nice shiny bits, even the long body trims, except it had all chrome boring bumpers, that was a V reg.

They did. The front bumper on this car has been changed. If you zoom right in on the photo you can just see the end of the rubber insert on the corner of the rear bumper.

Went to look at a blue Ghia in Bakewell, be about 2009! Old woman had it from new and it had only been used for sunday church runs, i'd never seen such a genuine car, garaged all it's life, the speedo reading was only some 3,000 miles, she was selling it because she no longer wanted to drive, she'd got it up forsale at just £2500, I wanted it but the missus wanted the 'new' fiesta, so we got the fiesta instead, still regret not getting the Escort now, Fiesta is worth naff all.

Circumstances can prevent car sales.  I've got a couple of unused cars myself.  But they're a victim of circumstance, as I can't sell them without creating consequences for myself.  But I also feel guilty for leaving them unused and taking up parking space that others could use.  Have had a couple of people asking to buy recently.  Thought washing them might prevent that happening again, but it hasn't.  There may also be an emotional attachment in the case of the Escort, potentially coming from a now deceased family member for example.

If it genuinely has been sat there for 20 years, the floor will have rotted out and it's likely beyond saving now.

The floor would've been rotted out at 5 years old!

Was common to see in the early 90's rotted floors/sills/arches/inner wings on MKII Escorts, my old mate owned his own garage and seemed to have a contract with second hand Escort owners, we used to laugh at the use of thick cardboard and black underseal hiding the rot 🤪 Was a common bodge in the 70's & 80's, not so much these days and i'm glad that bad practice is over with.

I still remember my cousin proudly showing off her brand new Mk 1 Escort. 18 months later both front wings were showing signs of perforation.

We moan a lot (usually rightly) on here about poor quality these days, but rust is certainly not the issue on recent cars it once was. (I make an exception for the Mk 1 Ka!)

Mk 2 Escorts are still very common as classic rally weapons, but they must all be like Trigger's broom by now!😀

I remember a neighbour getting a new MK4 Cortina in white, Crusader I think it was called ? He'd only had it for 6 months and he kept cursing the car creaks on one side of the car, he later gets looking into the noise and one side of the inner wing was showing signs of rust at a joint, on closer inspection the joint wasn't spot welded but the otherside had been welded, the creaking was from movement of the joint, so someone on the production line and completely missed out on welding one area, he took the car back to Ford, where they had it for a good few weeks, getting a call to say it had been fixed, he goes to get the car back and the area had been sorted, there was burn marks on the inner wings, with some bodger within Ford just spraying gloss white over the repaired area, he also noticed the outer wing had been removed and not put back on straight........Quality eh 😁

I remember that name - run out special edition of the last facelifted Mk 4 (aka Cortina 80 or Mk 5). Sounds like the workmanship on that one wasn't very special, though!

I parked down the road and walked past it to get a closer look. It has a 1978/9 T suffix plate.

There is a tax disc from 2002 still on the windscreen.
