Escort MK2 offset and bearing wear

Featured Replies

If have been told by a mechanic that the distance from the massive front hubs and the +20 offset wheels i use will deestroy the bearing quickly.

Will a negative offset such as -20 or -16 like in the minilite wheels solve the issue at all, or will it be exctly the same?

From my ancient experience with Mini wheel spacers (moved the rear wheels outwards) and bearing design you would definitely cause added risk of wheel bearing failure due to the additional loading (10% of bearings normally fail inside their design life anyway and you are likely to add to that)
Need to get the loading back to where it was originally designed, I don't know the details but that's the theory I work under.

Correct, I have noticed that most of these cars that have spacers suffer frequently bearing breakdowns. By frequent, I mean more than the cars running on stock stuff.

Just noticed your OP, if you can get the offset back to stock i.e. the loading point is moved back to the original design point (no additional extension to the loading point) then that will probably be OK?

That's because in gmail you see the responses in the email notifications, there was no need to log on.

I appreciate the responses from the other members.

The car is in winter storage as i'm in Finland and its snowing.

After further research, the spacers used are from GRP4: Mk1 Mk2 Escort GRP4 Front Hub Kit with Standard Studs

So i assume it is a hazard others are willing to tolerate.

However the car is on AZEZ 7.5 inch width jx16 H2 wheels and i plan to change to 15 inch Minilites.

Again thanks for the replies.
