Android phone - What e-mail app ?

Featured Replies

Well I finally bought a new phone and I'm already regretting it 🙁

I have a new Motorola Edge 40 Neo, simply because it was the smallest android phone I could find.

Now it seems that Motorola are hell bent on me using their pre-installed the Google 'Gmail' e-mail app. This is of no use to me as I have 3 e-mail addresses and they are not all Gmail, and it does not work with them all.

So my question is, what e-mail app do people recommend for android phones ?

It's a pity not all your e-mail accounts work with Gmail because that is the one I prefer, even for my Yahoo account. No adverts, easier to read text and often quicker than Yahoo.

You might need to have separate Apps if some of your ones are not compatible.

That's what I'm concerned about. My trusty Sony Xperia managed the three accounts just using the built in Sony e-mail programme.

Think I might just have to try a few and see if anything works. I've just tried Outlook Lite but I was swamped by adverts to the point I nearly forgot what it was I looking at 🤔

K9 mail, which I have used previously.

Thanks Alex, I'll give that a try now. 👍

Sorted the e-mail, going to use Thunderbird.

Thanks for the link @alexp999 😀

Hi Unofix

I have used Edison E Mail for 5 years - never a problem.

Outlook is an absolute no no

I'm of no use whatsoever in this matter. I too have several addresses, but simply use the WebMail version of each to access the emails. Just wanted to congratulate you in not buying an iPhone!

I have absolutely no idea what app I use.  Whatever was already on the front screen.  Think it has a picture of an envelope. :ermm:

Rarely use emails on mobile though, much prefer those on laptop.

I might also give that a try.

Thunderbird is working, kind of 🤔 For some reason it's not checking or alerting me to new e-mal. Setting are set for it to check every 15 minutes, but I'm sure it's not. Also its not giving me any kind of a alert either visual or audible when I receive new email. Perhaps I've just not found the settings for the alerts, but everything I have found is showing I should at least get a "ding dong" when e-mail arrives.

Oh how I miss my Sony Xperia 🙁

Sounds like it comes with strings attached.

It probably will not make you feel any better but Sony discontinued their inbuilt Email App from the Xperia 5 onwards.

Hi Unofix, you say For some reason it's not checking or alerting me to new e-mal. Setting are set for it to check every 15 minutes, but I'm sure it's not. I have just remembered I have forever had exactly the same problem but got to live with it. sometimes I do get alerts, but most of the time I don't. Everything is set correctly. I have just got into the habit of looking/checking my e mails say every hour. Not much of a problem being retired and on the scrap heap!

My phone is Android Samsung A34, 2 years old

How often do you guys get urgent emails?  I only check mine once or twice a day!

Quite a lot in my case, mostly to do with my social life for things like spaces becoming available or the booking being open for things that fill up very quickly. Everyone's lives are different.

I still maintain that Gmail is very good as long as it supports your provider. A lot of people think Google is evil but they provide so much free at the point of use and personally I couldn't care if they sell my data as long as I'm not bombarded with adverts or have to pay.

Fair point.  I forget some people have those!

On my laptop, 'thunderbird' gives me an instant audible alert of a new email along with a 10 second banner at bottom of screen telling me what it is. None of my emails are 'urgent' though I do like notifications from this site keeping me up to date.

I've found the problem with the lack of 'alerts' on the Motorola phone. Maybe this is the same for other android phones these days.

The problem.....

If you have the 'vibration' turned on, then the phone turns off all sound except when you get an incoming call. You have to go to a separate setting to turn on notification sounds if you also have vibrate enabled 🤔

No, I don't have vibration turned on

I used to use TypeApp on my Nexus phones, before I moved to iPhone

Thanks Dave. At the moment I'm testing Thunderbird, I've messed about and got it usable but like anything it's different to what I've been used to.

The latest issue that I seem to have is that there is no built in Photo album viewer and so I need to use an app. The Sony Xperia just came with an album viewer, no need for an app. So far I've tried a couple and have had to un-install both as I was swamped with adverts. 🙁

Google Photos must be pre-installed. I've never used it myself but I believe that you don't need to pay for Cloud Storage but Google keeps bugging you to do so.

Sony also got rid of their Album App for their later phones.

Google Photos give you 15GB of free storage.  I'm close to max on mine now.  (One of the reason I was considering moving to iPhone).

Indeed it was, but not now 🤣

They wanted to store my stuff on a server in a third world country (think they said it was a big fluffy cloud). I try to avoid Google getting involved with my personal stuff as much as possible, I simply don't trust them.

It seems progress means we get less of what we want and much more of what we don't 🙁

I probably worded my last post incorrectly, what I meant to say is that you can store your stuff on the Phone and don't need to to take the Cloud Storage option, even the free bit as far as I know but Google does bug you to do so.
