Shrinkflation

Featured Replies

Nescafe cappucino disappeared from our Tesco website a couple of weeks ago. It's now reappeared with the number of sachets per box reduced from 8 to 7 and the price increased. Taken together the actual price per sachet has jumped by 23.1%.

Won't be buying any more of those.

We've seen the boxes with only 6 sachets.

I've always loved ALPEN buying it in the big 1KG bags for £3.50p
Now it's 950grms price increased to £3.99p 😏

Sick of this shrinkflation so much I've actually asked ALPEN as to why they have done this, their excuse about it's costing them considerable more for the ingredient's and production energy costs have gone through the roof, told them I've been buying ALPEN since the late 1970's but it now ends, I've no idea how they did this but I got a £10 voucher from them, I'd not even gave them my address but somehow they'd found it.

Costs have gone up for everything from raw materials to factory energy and labour rates as well.  Things will cost more now, there's no getting away from that.

Personally I would like to see how much the manufacturers cost have increased though.  I don't mind companies making a profit at all, that's how the economy works, and if they are genuinely making less profit now then I'm begrudgingly happy to pay the extra.  But I don't agree with the sneaky shrinkflation tactics...

I would have the overall cost to the manufacturer publicly viewable somewhere, so that the consumer can decide whether the shop price is justified or not.

Some of the Clubcard deals are absurd now.  Well over half off for having a Clubcard.  The card data alone isn't worth that, so either Tesco or the manufacturer must be losing out during those offers. 🤔

Or making an absolute mint on the non-offer price. I posted elsewhere that I recently bought a new electric toothbrush in Tesco - over 50% less with Clubcard.

No doubt @StephenFord having been in the business, could comment on supermarket pricing strategy.

Can't see that happening! I spent most of my working life in procurement and often compared trying to get to the bottom of the true cost of a good or service to peeling an onion and hoping to get to the core.

Surprising thing was, we often found that manufacturers themselves had little idea of the true cost of their products. I'm reminded of the old story of Ford (who were masters of penny pinching) dissecting an original BMC Mini to find out how they could make it for the price and still make a profit. They couldn't, of course!😀

Supermarkets now regularly practice 'dynamic' pricing, simply meaning they vary pricing to extract the maximum possible from every customer. In the olden days, a packet pf crisps would cost the same whether you were in London, Glasgow or Belfast. Now it depends on what area you live, and how much you can afford before being 'offered' a price'. The 'clubcard' though being offered 'free', determines what price you'll eventually be charged. It's particularly bad if you are poor, or single.

eg, mum often wants to buy one can of soup, and can't afford to buy 6 at a time to qualify for a large discount.

In Morrisons after Easter had finished they'd got Cadbury cream eggs for just 10p each, hundreds reduced but they obviously didn't sell because they was too dear, still got 20 in the fridge.

I have seen some very good clubcard deals on car fluids. Tesco Extra shops usually have a car supplies section. It was seeing these offers that persuaded me to get the card after never having one before.

They seem to change the offers around at the start of each month.

They had 4l bottles of Prestone coolant for £8 each a few months back. I have also seen Castrol oils, Redex fuel additive and adblue at half price.

They sell Osram car bulbs cheaper than they can be found in motor factors without clubcard.

Definitely worth a look in that section of the shop.

Looks like it on the leaflet.  They don't have an online store so you would just have to check a local shop.

Government looking at shrinkflation of speed limits. 🤔

Heidi Alexander MP, Secretary of State for Transport looking to 'Repeal' the repeal of the Locomotives on Highways Act 1865. 🤣

This would bring back the man (or woman, or thing) with the red flag, but more likely a Rainbow flag 🏳️‍🌈
