1.0 EcoBoost Auto Towing

Featured Replies

As I understand it, these gearboxes can be marginal at the best of times.

Due to circumstances I’ve been forced to sell my Transit Custom. Can i carry out occasional towing duties with the little 1.0 Auto or will the gearbox lunch itself?

It will be fine for towing your Tesco shopping trolley home 👍

Thanks. I was hoping to occasionally tow a trailer of firewood home

Would the firewood not fit in the boot if it's only an occasional trip?

I towed a small trailer for around 12 months and got so fed up with it being awkward to reverse (particularly on country lanes) I swapped to estate car instead.  Chucked anything and everything in the boot, much easier.

Realistically a small trailer shouldn't add much weight for the gearbox to pull though.  I could wheel mine around by hand.

This is in fact a topic of interest to me too, but for a SW focus with a manual gearbox. I am thinking of getting a small trailer to carry my motorbike around. It is a 250 kg motorbike, and normally I wouldn't have had any worries. However, after reading about the popping out of gear issues, I am not so sure anymore it is a good idea to tow anything.

I'd even be cautious about taking a slightly overweight passenger in one of these...

Yes, I have been avoiding that too, but not because of the gearbox. Because of the ground clearance! 😛

Not really suitable for the boot - when i say firewood i mean logs that I’ve chainsaw’d so could potentially have bugs and such. A little too big and messy for the boot

The manual will tell you what loads you can tow.

Thanks yes i know how much i can officially tow legally.

What i was wanting to know is that given that i have a Powershift gearbox, am i likely to damage it given that it appears to be quite a fragile gearbox? Regardless of  what weight I’m towing

It's not a powershift in yours, it's a 6F15 with a torque converter

Little bits of towing will be OK but the cooling system is a bit poor, so watch it doesn't get cooked and don't push it too hard

Thank you Dave. That’s very helpful. Yes I’d be very careful with the towing plus it’s short distances.

Someone told me the ‘66 focus 1.0 eco boost was Powershift?

I think Dave's covered that in this earlier thread.....

Bugs? 😱  I was using mine for garden maintenance.  Just put an old bed sheet down and rammed entire conifers and holly bushes etc in there, along with rotten fence panels, car parts, engine blocks, gearboxes, and even most of a property move...  Each to their own. I just wouldn't waste time and money fitting an ugly towbar and storing a trailer just to avoid the odd bug ending up in the car occasionally.  I'd much rather that than the bodily fluids I always seem to find in used cars...now that is grim!

Good! The 6F15 seems the more robust of the 2 gearboxes

Next question...will 9 year old wetbelts be up to towing? 🤔

  • Author

No fella. That ones covered. Replacement engine from Pumaspeed. And I’ll be changing oil and filter every 6000 miles

Indeed 👍

Just don't over fill your Tesco trolley before towing it home and you'll be fine 🤣

It’s not my 1st choice for towing but due to circumstances i had to sell my transit and were down to a 1 vehicle household again. Just trying to make do 😞

Like I said, the cooling system on this trans is pants.

Maybe get set up on mobile Forscan or similar so you can monitor the transmission temperature whilst towing to keep an eye on it
