Battery rating

Featured Replies

For a 6 year old focus active X automatic  without stop/start I am recommended the Napa Start-Stop ECM (AFB) Battery  CCA: 650

AH: 65 from National Tyres 5yr garranty  £179.00

The battery currently fitted looks like the original Ford battery rated as 700  so I would like to know it the 650 would be suitable  and what Ford would charge

Many  thanks in advance

It isn't usual to reduce the CCA when changing the battery. No idea what Ford would charge, are you able to fit one yourself if we recommend the right one? Can you upload a photo of the label on the current battery?

So the cca as long as it's close enough is fine, it's the capacity of the battery you do not want to reduce, so for instance if the stock battery was 70 ah, then replace it with a 70 or 75 ah battery

Ford are likely to charge around £250 for the battery.  Plus another £100 or so for fitting.

I did not think this car had auto start/stop but i am not sure now We havn't had the car long and it doesn't cut out at traffic lights bt this may be due to the a poor battery  Is there any way this can be checked as it may affect the battery I go with

If it has stop/start, there will be a button with a capital A in a circle on the centre dash console.

The fact that the car currently has an EFB battery means that you should replace it with another EFB battery, regardless of the stop/start function.

I cannot believe that it does not have Start/Stop!

The Varta D3V5A ESP (bottom left on your label) cross checks on Google to a Varta 096 EFB.

096 EFB Batteries:

I would go with this: https://www.tayna.co.uk/car-batteries/yuasa/ybx7096/

YBX7096 Yuasa EFB Start Stop Car Battery 12V 75Ah

75Ah 700CCA 4 year warranty £92.79 delivered.

The usual recommendation for any Focus Mk4 is Yuasa YBX7096

If you are going to change the battery yourself, then I would recommend the Yuasa YBX7096 from Tayna batteries (link in Yog's post above). Yuasa batteries seem to last very well, and Tayna's service is excellent (next day if ordered before the cut off time).

Don't forget the BMS will need resetting when a new battery is fitted (easy to do yourself, no special tools needed).

It seems I do have auto start/stop but it has not been working maybe because I have a poor battery  Looking on line to do the reset without special tools seems a bit uncertain  Is there a guide to do this and how can I be sure it has worked

Thanks

Before you pay out cash on a new battery, have you checked the battery voltage yourself with a multimeter and tried charging it with a smart charger?

Honestly, my experience of auto start stop in a MK4 is it will rarely work even with a fresh battery unless you either do a lot of long journeys or you leave it parked up with a battery tender hooked up.

the reason I think I need a new battery the car  faiked to start after a week in the garage  I got the AA out who got it going and monitored the recharging rate His  report is as follows

Started your vehicle, tested your battery, charging system and tested for electrical drains. Your battery was found to be unserviceable and may require replacement. Member had recently purchased vehicle, found that battery has heavily sulphated and needs replacement,

Ok the battery definitely needs replacement then. @unofix has a couple of videos on how to do the battery reset, it's really easy, doesn't involve any tools and the battery light on the dashboard will flash 3 times to confirm that you have done it properly. The hardest part on a Focus is getting the battery out and in because of the position of the battery tray.

Ok the MK4, it's a lot easier than earlier focus in my experience as there is nothing overhanging the battery.

CAUTION: The reference at the beginning of the video saying that the BMS should be reset after charging the battery in incorrect.

The Battery Monitoring System (BMS) should only be reset if a new battery has been fitted.

I asked ChatGPT re BMS The instructions are broadly the same but not identical to  the video  method 2 There seems to be a disageement as to whether the lights should be switched on or off and whether the battery icon flashes 3 times to tell me it has worked   It suggested  that the procdure changed at some point in time My car is a 2019 reg  so can anyone confirm that the video is correct for me

Make sure you fully (100%) charge the battery before fitting and carrying out the BMS reset.

Do not rely on the new battery being 100% charged, because it won't be!

You can. 😀 If it doesn't seem to work then come back here and tell us what happened. No one will die if the BMS reset doesn't happen immediately after the battery is installed. Follow one of the procedures that Unofix has provided then wait about 1 minute. If the battery light flashes 3 times then you are all good. If it doesn't then try the other procedure.

If I had to guess I would expect Method 2, 5 main beam flashes + 3 brake pedal presses to work on the Mk 4 Focus.

More recent Fords have the battery reset procedure in the user handbook, have you looked there?

Ignore the AI ChatGPT nonsense which is just trawling through all the answers on the internet and believing the ones that occur most often, as in the rest of life shouting loudly or repeating the same information often won't make it any more true.

Method 2 is the correct one for a Focus Mk4. 👍

I found method 2 to not work in the auto MK4, so I ended up just using forscan, you may also have to.

It worked fine for my 2019 Focus Mk4 (auto).

One thing that does seem to matter is that the drivers door needs to be closed. The other thing is the delay before the light flashes is a good 30 seconds.
