galaxy 2010 2.0 ecoboost, auxiliary heater info needed

Featured Replies

I have a galaxy titanium 2.0 ecoboost from 2010.

I have found that it might have auxiliary heater. If so, it doesn't function at the moment.

Questions:

How can I find out if I have an auxiliary heater?

There is no remote control. Is it needed to function? Or can the heater be set from the car menu? (The ford dealer told me the remote is mandatory for diagnosis and repair, but will cost me 300 euro for just the remote. Waste of money of this leads to nothing)

If I have it and it doesn't function. what are common problems?

Correct.

They are not a very common thing in the UK.

What's the VIN of the vehicle and I'll try and get the Ford build sheet for it ?

A petrol auxiliary heater sounds like a disaster waiting happen.  I thought they were only fitted to diesels!

Petrol auxiliary heaters have been available for Years from leading manufacturers like Eberspacher, Webasto, etc. These are especially popular in Camper applications. Now Diesel engines have become very unpopular or even banned in quite a few countries the Petrol powered auxiliary heater systems are gaining popularity.

The factory fitted fuel fired auxiliary heater systems that Ford used are vehicle specific and integrate into the existing vehicle electronics. A factory fitted fuel fired auxiliary heater system can usually be identified by settings in the instrument cluster menu.

However, an auxiliary heater does not necessarily have to be the fuel fired auxiliary heater. The full electric PTC heater system is also called auxiliary heater by Ford.

The PTC heater system consists of an electric heater element that is installed into the heater housing. The PTC heater system is only active when:

• Engine temperature below 60 °C.
• Outside ambient temperature below 10 °C.
• Sufficient battery State of Charge.
• Sufficient alternator charge capacity.

On many Ford models the PTC heater system works seamlessly together with the regular heater system and the status of the PTC heater system is often not displayed on the instrument cluster.

Why disaster?

My previous car (Volvo xc70 2003) also had a park heater. A really nice option in the winter. Also petrol car

Ah, nice info!

I have the parking heater option displayed in the instrument cluster.

Today I had the car checked at the dealer. there is indeed a parking heater. it was disconnected and the coolant piping were bypassed from the heater.

They reconnected the plugs, but it didn't function. the dealer doesn't know why it doesn't work.  problem is that they have no knowledge about these systems. The dealer told me that they can replace the whole unit,  but can't guarantee anything.

Another problem is that parking heater specialist don't have access to the Ford computer.

In the past I've fixed my parking heater in the Volvo. As long as the computer works,  it's quite simple hardware.

I'll bring it to the parking heater specialist in februari to have a look at it

Petrol is extremely flammable.  Even a tiny leak while parked will create vapour that could be ignited by a discarded cigarette butt or the smallest spark from static when you touch the door.

By contrast, diesel is difficult to ignite.  A diesel leak just creates a smelly puddle on the floor.  You can even drop a cigarette butt in it and it'll just put it out.

Each to their own of course, personally I just wouldn't feel safe using a petrol park heater.

uhm, a parking heater is a bit more sophisticated then just making a bonfire under your car :).

your engine is also running on this dangerous highly flammable stuff i guess

Correct.  I wouldn't want to let a petrol engine start remotely and run without supervision either.

A park heater adds another layer of parts and pipework that will eventually break, increasing the risk even further.

True. Anyway, different subject.

cool! quite some options alltogether

Good to know that it's a Webasto heater (it's on the remote). And that the remote isn't needed to operate (the first dealer I called told me I first needed to order the remote before they could do anything. Remote costs €300...)

You don't know a workshop manual for this car?

update!

The heater is fixed!

I went to a aux heater webasto specialist. The heater was detached: plugs and the coolant system bypassed. One of the coolant pipes was broken (probably happenend when detaching/bypassing). Unfortunately, the plugs were different from a aftermarket version. So the heater could not be tested on the bench. They rebuild everything, new pipes, hoses and plugged the unit in. And... nothing... just silence.

It was possible though to program the heater again in the menu. Not grayed out anymore. But nothing happened.

No errors in the system (forscan and their computer)

Went to the ford dealer next door and they found multiple errors with their ford computer. After resetting: succes!

really unclear why the unit was detached/bypassed. Just seemed to need a proper reset. But nice it's working again.

Heater: webasto top v petrol, ford part number ag9n-18k463-bb (bb is petrol version)
