2012 s-max 2.2 not starting

Featured Replies

Hi everyone after some help, I'll start from where everything stater going wrong with my 2012 s-max 2.2

First of all I got an error saying the dpf was blocked so I got so dpf cleaner removed the dpf poured in left over night an jet washed out the following day put it back on an used the car in the hopes it would clear after a few days stated going in an out of limp mode stupidly I carried on using it as I had no other way of getting to work.

About a week later she cut out an died on the motorway got towed home had a mate that had a good diagnostic machine plug into it pinged ou a load of faults all pointing to the intank pump (dpf still showing blocked) anyway so I replaced the intank pump bled fuel through the lines to make sure not blocked but still won't start.

I can get the car stated on easy start but dies after a few min but the car has no fuel flowing. No fuel at the rail its bone dry no fuel getting to high pressure pump an no fuel going to filter. So something is stopping the car pumping fuel up from the tank to the filter an so on. I have primed fuel up to the filter an from the filter to the high pressure pump bit still won't start.

Anyone have any ideas what might be stopping the car from sending fuel up from the tank to start the car.

Thanks in advance

Do you mean your mate has an expensive diagnostic machine ?

A good diagnostic reader would be a Ford dealers equipment or it would be FORScan.

It sounds like you have introduced another problem that probably wasn't there. I'm not sure if your model even uses the in tank fuel pump (even though it is fitted, many do not use it). If the in tank fuel pump was in use and was running then there would be no need to hand prime the low pressure side of the fuel lines. Once the fuel reached the high pressure pump it would draw the fuel through.

Perhaps @TomsFocus will know the answer about the in tank pump.

AND IMHO, if you get DPF blocked code(s) then just cleaning it wont fix the underlying problem that caused it to block in the first place (just echoing and agreeing with Jimmy) for example:

Does this model have a vaporiser?
Assume the filter has been changed (when was it last done)?

I don't know for sure on the 2.2 TDCI unfortunately.

Hi yes I guess I mean expensive diagnostic machine it total ive had 3 different machines/computers plugged into the car as 1 mate of a mate runs his own garage an he can't figure out why the car wont start.

The reason the intank pump was replaced cos it was pinging out an error with the fuel temp sensor which is located withing the intank pump so we did that to eliminate any other issues.

We only primed as we wanted to check there was no blockage or air lock between tank an filter and then checked the other side from filter to HP pump but still not getting fuel to ***** up from tank.

Its baffled everyone ive asked.

Hi yes this does have a vaporizer and it would seam its blocked or broken which i will get sorted along with a new dpf but need to get the car started first to make it viable to spend money on it but even with a blocked dpf the car should still start an run on its own.

Fuel filter hasn't been changed but it will be getting done after Xmas.

You need to use FORScan and get the Ford specific DTC's.

FORScan (for use with Windows Laptop) : https://forscan.org/download.html

It's what many Ford owners use including some Ford technicians.

OR

For diagnostic use only:

Forgive my dumbness as i grew up playing an fixing cars/bikes without a computer to tell me what's wrong with it.

Do I just buy that cable plug into car an my laptop an download the app an then i can read every code an issue with the car.

Again sorry for my stupidity I figured out issues the old way of getting greasy an dirty 😆

Yes, that's pretty much it 👍

I'd buy the vLinker FS cable, it's what most people use.

FORScan for windows will come with a 30 day licence. The full licence (allows programming) costs £12 for a year

If the vaporiser is blocked and then repaired (issues are blockage, glow plug failure or low resistance, blowing the fuse and unlikely pump fuse or failure) or replaced, then the DPF (unless damaged or very seriously blocked - get data from Forscan) should perhaps regenerate itself?
If DIY, suggest clamping fuel hose to avoid the need to prime which I haven't seen in Forscan. Jimmy has multiple vaporiser videos.

Need to get fuel rail pressure up to somewhere near the demanded value (Forscan is your friend) but some codes may reveal any other issues.

Oh, and depending on amount of blockage, a forced regen (best avoided if at all possible due to risk of extreme heat damage (see Jimmy again) would be my last ditch attempt?
