Front strut + spring renewal tips

Featured Replies

Car failed MOT on to snapped front coil springs both bottom coil (which may be why I hardly noticed). 2008 Focus 1.8 TDCI

Had a couple of new Motorcraft struts in the garage already and ordered springs (Bilstein B3 OEM) and other bits.

It's a quite straightforward job and you can find guides but some lessons I learned might be useful for others:

The MK3 Focus rubber seats for the springs fit (an upgrade as MK2 did not have them). 1683279

Use a spreading tool to open up the hub carrier for the new strut marker tab to insert into (for removal the tool is not necessary but for refitting it's very helpful). £5-6 from eBay, £20 collected from GSF when you're in a bind (me).

Be careful of letting the inner CV boots stretch out after the struts have been removed, especially drivers side (RHD), I was able to correct it after it stretched out, but best to avoid by securing the hub carrier so it doesn't tip away from the car drawing out the driveshaft.

Use of a drift and lump hammer from below on the hub around the area holding the strut may be useful for getting the strut properly seated. I found this more effective and precise than pushing up on the control arm with a jack (maybe try both, or just use jack to support the hub?).

Other members will have other tips I'm sure, but hopefully this might prove useful to some.
