Picking up my focus on Sunday - Service Plan!?

Featured Replies

Well, I am finally picking up my Focus on Sunday. Not sure when it was last serviced but as I never trust cars fully when I first buy them I am planning on servicing it on Monday, so shopping list thus far is

Oil

Oil Filter (Bosch)

Sump Plug and washer

Air Filter (Bosch)

Pollen Filter (Bosch)

Wiper blades front and Rear (Valeo)

Is it worth doing the Fuel filter?

Can anyone advise if anything else that needs / should be done (Other than a full valet)

The cars done approx 160k

I vote for flush before the oil change (but if it's got really dirty oil and never been well maintained it may disturb c__p)
I also vote for fuel filter change if you don't have concrete evidence that it has been done (then you'll know it has been as you seem to be wanting long term care)
I also vote for regular parts rather than premium (Comline etc - never had any problems)
Also for 15 years I have used the same plug and washer but added Loctite sealant.

@b787register agree with @Shearers with that mileage I would do the first oil change without flush. See how the car runs and if ok, consider a flush next year. Fuel filter is worth changing right away with other filters and oils (including gearbox oil if possible - after 160K it's due if unknown when last).

I wouldn't risk flushing a 16v 1.6 TDCI engine now. This engine was well known for carbon deposits blocking oil ways. The last thing you want is to loosen a lump of carbon that isn't causing any issues where it is, but ends up getting stuck further down the line where it does cause issues, blowing the turbo for example.

Fuel filter recommendation was every 37.5k miles on these. The filter is very expensive. And there's no electric lift pump, so you need a hand pump in order to prime the system before starting the engine again. It's absolutely worth doing, but you need to be prepared to prime it before making the car undriveable.

Also, I thought the car had full Ford service history from your previous thread? How can you not know when the last service was if that is the case? I've just checked the Ford database and it's not showing any recent Ford services at all. (Not all dealerships fill in the DSR though, so that's not a completely reliable check).

I'm glad I flushed from the very start and was bought a Mityvac (much cheaper vacuum/pressure pumps are available) plus I KNOW the real service history having done it for over 12 years, rather than having to trust to made up or otherwise paperwork and variable online records.
It's almost tempting to give up making what I would term "sensible" suggestions as they don't apply when all of the dodgy caveats are mentioned (correctly of course)
End of slight rant!

I flushed on my second oil change after acquiring a SH (50K only) with only part service history. Was surprised how much carbon was in the bucket of old oil. The last inch was like running your fingers through a mix of fine sand and water like on the beach.

It looks like it's got history but not "Ford" history, hence me wanting to get it fully serviced then I know it's been done and done properly
