2010 1.6 TdCi - Dashboard without function, car won't start

Featured Replies

Hello,

My car stopped functioning, at least most of the time. The fault I will describe comes and goes (but mostly comes and stays).

  • The car does not start

  • The dashboard does not come on

  • !! The immobiliser LED between speedometer and rpm gauge stays off - This is crucial, because if it flashes intermittently, the car will start reliably.

  • Even with the dashboard off, I can switch on the lights, the radio etc.

So far I could rule out:

  • Battery (12.8 V)

  • Ignition switch (tested with multimeter)

  • Starting relay (12 V and click)

  • Fuses

I doubt that it is a problem with the key because the ignition lock works just fine and as stated above, once the immobiliser LED is blinking, the dashboard will light up and the engine starts upon turning the key.

That is as far as I have come using the Haynes repair manual. How likely is it, that the dashboard is the culprit?

Thanks in advance for suggestions how to fix it

Very. The solder breaks down over time, making and breaking connections randomly.

However, I wouldn't trust a multimeter test on the ignition switch. The fault symptoms you have point slightly more towards the switch than the dash. Dash symptoms generally also appear while driving. Not only when starting.

Thank you. Dashboard never malfunctioned during driving. I have ordered a new transponder for the key, should be arriving on Monday and then programmed by the dealer. So if it is soldering time on Tuesday, I will let you know.

The transponder does not prevent the instrument cluster from turning on in any way. The transponder can be ruled out immediately.

It does not make sense to replace the transponder and having it programmed by A Ford dealer. You can save yourself the money for that and Focus on the instrument cluster directly.

True. It is the dashboard itself. I have a second Focus (albeit slightly different make) with the same dashboard and swapped it - voilá, display works. However, starting is not possible, probably due to the mismatch between key and dashboard. Also, the mileage display is apparently stored within the dashboard itself.

Anyway - a very relieved THANK YOU so far to @JW1982 and @TomsFocus . I'm rather confident now that this is not the car's end.
