Featured Replies

Hi I have a smax 2010 2.0 tdci I have oil seeping out of intake manifold and when I disconnect it by undoing the clip and pulling it off I start the engine and smoke is pouring out. i have circled what pipe it is

Which side is the smoke coming from? Pipe side or manifold side?

The EGR joins just above there so that could be open and blowing raw exhaust with that pipe off.

There's also an oil breather pipe before the turbo which will be dumping a bit if oil vapour into the manifold which could smoke/steam.

Or worst case scenario the turbo oil seal has failed on the inlet side and is blowing partially burnt oil up through the pipework.

(Also the manifold shouldn't be leaking at all. That will need to be replaced once you fix the smoke fault).

Pipe side its not dripping if I rub under the pipe you will see oil on your fingers I did have to change turbo inlet pipe as it was cracked

So, with engine running, you have confirmed that smoke is coming FROM turbo (as it's not clear to me) that this has been determined?

With engine running oil is coming from inlet manifold the pipe which is circled.

I noticed oil on bottom of pipe so took it off and oil on inside of it. when engine running smoke comes form it i think the pipe leads to intercooler then to turbo.

I recently changed turbo inlet pipe from airbox to turbo as it was cracked

If oil can get out there then you're losing boost pressure as well. Ideally all of the intake needs to be sealed 100%. But on an older car there will be a few boost leaks and a bit of oil misting from those leaks.

A bit of oil vapour from the turbo side is acceptable, that comes from the oil breather hose. But if it's excessive then the turbo oil seal has failed. Not something we can confirm over the internet unforurtunately.

Well its not lots of oil there but I was more concerned when I unfassend the silver jubilee clip and pulled pipe off turned on engine and smoke was coming out of the pipe that I think leads to intercooler

Yes, airbox > turbo > intercooler > manifold.

There will be some smoke/steam if you open that pipe because of the oil breather sending hot crank gasses back through the intake. The turbo is also heating the air that it compresses, which is full of moisture, and that will condense back to steam if it loses pressure and hits cooler air instead of going through the manifold while still compressed. That pipe is never meant to be open with the engine running so it's very difficult to say whether there's actually a fault here or not.
